Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

I'm fine with the Grayson pick. After the Wizards took Brown I knew the Jazz were ****ed. I thought Brown or Huerter would go to Atlanta and the Jazz would take who dropped. At that point I thought there was only one high potential player left, Okobo. I'm disappointed we didnt go Okobo, but I think I know why they didnt.

I think they want to keep the relationship with Exum as positive as possible going into contract negotiations. If the Jazz draft another player who labels himself as a PG, maybe that turns Exum off from negotiating in good faith. If Exum signs with the Jazz long-term, there is still a clear path for him to be a starter in 2019/202 if he plays well enough (to be clear, I dont think this is likely, but I think it's important for Exum to think it is). When Allen got drafted all he has said is about how he is excited to play off ball more, which was probably a selling point for Utah since they have 3 rotation guards who are better on ball than off already. I know some people will roll their eyes at the thought of that, but I still think Utah believes in Exum (who is only a few months older than Allen).

If they took Okobo, it would be another player who needs to be on-ball to develop to his true potential. Not that Okobo is useless off-ball, but his biggest strength is off the dribble shooting and PNR. With Allen he has a bit more offensive versatility and a larger body of work to prove he is a good shooter. I bet they also believe in Allen's defense a bit more. They both showed similar issues defensively in PNR play, but Allen shows more fire in other areas which probably gives them hope he can translate that into playing more focused/high energy in a smaller role/minutes load on the defensive end.

As well, the Jazz's peak competitive years should start in Year 3 of Donovan's career (of this current iteration of the Jazz). By that time, Grayson Allen should essentially be in his prime (or close to it), so he fits in nicely with Utah's timeline as a discount Eric Gordon/6th man type.

Excellent post.

Sure... put a few picks in the deal then... there was tremendous value from 34-48... we could have beat one of those offers and can wait until the new cap year to complete the deal if the team has recieved the maximum allowable during the current cap year.
Yeah, but that's a lot to give up when your roster is already full.

I was never that high on DD. I would’ve still selected Allen over DD

Are you surprised Brown when the that high to the wiz?

I'm not surprised Brown went that high, but I'm surprised he went to the Wizards.

I really thought they would draft for fit over talent.

I don't think the roster is full... i think it could be full... we have 3 free agents and 3 NG guys... if one leaves the roster is not full...

I mean the roster was "full" when we signed Royce last year... so things can get worked out.

He must not have liked those guys... I did... some of the summer league guys are interesting though so maybe he just liked them better and wanted to go that route. I trust DL, but we have sold a lot of picks or punted by taking guys that are G League fodder. It's bothered me.

No way he ever starts over Porter or Beal. To me it was a weird pick for them, but then again there were a ton of wings and little in the way of 4’s and 5’s.

It would only bother me if the back-end of the roster was complete trash vets and the Jazz never found anyone outside of the draft.

Yeah, but they might trade Porter and they might not have enough $$$ to re-sign Oubre in 2019, so they do have a need for more wing depth (as does pretty much every NBA team).

I get it. Just keep in mind that our starting center and DPOY was picked at #27, and last year we moved up from #24 to get our franchise player. Maybe my expectations were a bit jacked up. If the Jazz wanted to be more aggressive in the draft, they probably could have been. Don't be surprised if players like Hutchison, Simons, Okobo and Musa become quality starters in a couple years.

Yes, but no one knows if the Jazz could have moved up this year. The Jazz have a little bit of a reputation now so maybe people are less incline to help them move up. I read today that they did try to work a deal with Washington about getting Porter when he was dropping but Denver took him. We all know Denver is not going to trade with us anymore.

It is true that other players could be better than Allen but every draft is like that. Jazz are done baking the cake and now they are frosting it and soon with decorate it. Allen fits better because he is more ready to play now. Except for Hutchinson all those others you mentioned are development type players with flaws. They may be better in the future but it may take them 2-3 years or longer to get up to speed. The Jazz also tried to get back into mix to grab Okobo but they couldn't get a deal done. Sometimes other teams aren't willing to trade their picks are want too much, the GM has to make the call. I will wait and see about Allen before I get too upset about the pick. He wasn't my first guy but I am ok with the pick.

What is going to be funny is if Allen sucks it up in summer league people will be saying I told you so and if he kills it that other will do the same. I think people should just see how it works out. Give the guy a real chance.

I understand the pick. I'm just disappointed the draft turned out the way it did. Robert Williams dropping likely cost us someone on our list.

Allen is probably a 4th guard. His getting minutes will depend on how well he shoots and whether one of our PGs is injured. He's basically taking Burks' and Neto's minutes. I think the Jazz are really betting on him as a shooter. The rest of his game is pretty average.

Wait, links for all these things?
