Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

I don't watch any college ball so have no idea about the other players. But if Jazz management, DM and Rudy support GA as a pick, then I think he will be fine. I'd rather have someone who is over competitive and willing to work for a position than someone who is soft and doesn't want to practice or looks like a deer in headlights.

If GA turns out to be a solid shooter and can hold his own on defense, it probably means that Neto will need to be moved (assuming Dante stays).

I imagine we will probably hold onto Alec as backup insurance to fight out remaining minutes behind Ingles at SF with Royce (and Sefalosha depending on health)..

We have a good group of guys but I do wonder... what we’re rudy and DM supposed to say? We don’t like the pick we wanted the French kid. The ingles Rubio welcome exchange was pretty funny. I enjoy the guys running each other and how friendly and funny they are... I’ll bet our locker room is top 2-3 as far as fun, supportive teammates.

I want to see a poll on this pick. Seems like a lot of fans hate it.

I don’t understand it at all. Character matters. And just because Allen behaved his senior year doesn’t mean the character flaws aren’t there.
Funny because when everyone was debating DW vs CP3 I didn't hear too many not wanting CP3 because he punched a few guys in the balls. From all accounts Allen, is smart and a nice guy and teammate.

Yes the tripping incidents are certainly a cause for concern but I don't think they define the guy. I am fine with the pick need to see how his defense is. People who were expecting an all-star at 21 then perhaps you should lower your expectations. I think he fits perfect as a bench player which the Jazz need. Our bench struggles with scoring so I think he can help.

Eh, I think that two lessons that the Jazz have learned about drafting are:

1. Mental make up is the most important "upside" measurement. Jazz want competitors with talent. Trey Lyles is oozing with talent, but has the mental tenacity of a 15 year old. You can have a player that checks off all of the analytics but will never set or fight through a back screen. We need hard mother ******* that want to win and won't complain about 3 hour practices. Trey Lyles is more talented with more upside than Crowder, but Crowder shows up to play and will bleed if that is required of him, which makes him the far better Jazzman. The jazz selecting Allen may be less of an endorsement of him than an indictment on the rest of the talented players that were mocked around him. Allen could very well have been the baseline and none of the other players showed they could be more in the workouts and scouting.

2. There comes a point where you can't be developing players for 5 years, especially as a small market team. There may be some gems in the rough at the spot where the Jazz drafted Allen, but teams are likely to put in an entire rookie contract and probably an extension before they find it out. And for every gem found eight more teams are going to extend a dud. There is a 10% chance that one of these dudes with upside that were drafted after Allen will become an all-star and a secondary scoring option. But at 21 you are looking for a solid contributor off the bench. If you get that you won. Chances are, the Jazz got that.

It wasn't a "deep draft." This was nowhere near last year's draft where a Mitchell was available at 13. Sometimes "there are picks at 21 which could have been in the lottery" means that your late lottery sucks.

Personally I love that he will antagonize people.

We gonna act like Stockton wasn’t dirty? And he’s the most beloved Jazz man ever.

I cant watch this with sound..... can anyone tell me what donovan said please?

Starts off with typical congratulations. Then he tries to back out of the interview. Reporter insists and he says that Grayson is an “elite scorer, good defender, unselfish. We got a good one”.

I think it was a good pick @21

He got a little rudy in him, wants to win. Seems like a good fit. I said we needed a near 40% 3pt shooter on high volume and he checks off.

I'm just curious who the other player they were weighing him against was, I have a feeling it was Devonte Graham!

Great post.

It's a new day, the sun is shining, and I'm over my Allen angst. Here's to a bright future for our newest Jazz member.

In DL we trust!
