Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

There is something about Locke that makes my blood boil. I was ready to move on and let it go and just hope Allen will improve his game, but just listen to his podcast today selling Allen. I've never seen mental gymnastics like this... so the 3 criticisms against him are -
(1) he can't defend... but oh well who could in college really? even Mitchell wasn't awesome in Louisville? ORLY? You gonna sell me this bill of goods? WTF are you looking at? Donovan was a monster defensively. Allen projects as worse denfender than Trae FRICKING YOUNG and Jerome Robinson... Process that for a little bit.

(2) elite athlete vs cones but doesn't show on tape - "I mean it's kinda true"... finishing at the rim in the 40s(FOURTIES!!!!), previous 2 year in the low 50s???? You know how we harp on Burks not being a efficient finisher even though he has flashy finishes at the rim? Well Burks in the NBA was MUCH better than Allen has been vs inferior competition in college. Also... when the floor was spread he was actually going to the rim... ORLY? Like... you mean... totally like the personnel we don't really have to play? Well OK then. I bet he will be going to the rim a ton with Rudy and Favs in there. Oh and one more... "u can see his athleticism when he chases contested balls" this is the first time I've heard this nonsense. So you are telling me Delly is an awesome athlete too? ORLY? Keep talking... lets hear more...

(3) for the reputation of an elite shooter... he's actually kind of... meh shooter. In essence in this exercise he tried limiting the sample to numbers that are not representative and saying - "I mean... he can improve on this(shooting open shots), or that"...

So to sum up - we should love the pick.. .but... 1. he cannot defend, 2. his supposed athleticism actually cannot be seen on tape, except when he goes for loose balls, and he cannot finish a the rim 3. his supposed super strength(shooting) is actually not super strong either...

Believe me, I was really getting to a place where I was OK with this pick, but this BS has engaged my gag reflex and I cannot swallow all the BS I'm being fed by the company shill.

If we were to make a move and land Spellman or KBD, in addition — guys who fill a need that I don’t think can be filled in free agency — then this is a totally different draft. People were moving out of the second round in exchange for two future second rounders. We are already owed two future seconds from SA and WAS. With our history of treating them like leftovers that sit in the fridge for a week before throwing out, are we averse to combining them and landing something of value (like a KBD), or do we think we’ll easily replace that in FA, or that we’ll run it back with Favors and he’ll start hitting threes?

Allen will probably be a decent player. No concerns about that. But “landing a guy who could be okay” isn’t what was sold about staying in the draft when we passed on Niko — a guy who’s already leaps and bounds above “a decent player,” not to mention filling a critical need we have. It’s the context of everything that’s frustrating. No beef with Allen. Actually quite miffed about the second rounder issue.

Looking at his stats at Duke I have one significant concern:

As Allen's Usage % and FGA's went down after his sophomore year his efficiency numbers went down as well. In fact it's pretty glaring.

The expectation in the NBA is that he'll need to come off the bench and be productive in small spurts of 3 to 6 minutes. How do you measure this in work-outs when it's all about the kid? I guess you can't

Is Allen another Jimmer type that needs to be the focal point to be effective?

Hoping it's just a maturity thing.

He’s still the same guy who put up 22/5/4 on 47/42/80something as a sophomore. He just ended up playing with multiple top 10 draft picks.

Uber competitive, no game too big. Look what he did coming off the bench against Wisconsin in the title game as a freshman. He won Duke that game. We need a guy like that.
