What's new

Jazz select Udoka Azubuike with pick 27 & trade Tony Bradley + pick 38 to the Pistons

he has a jump hook with both hands, he has excellent footwork, he has great hands, he can finish through contact, he's good on both ends in the PnR, he's an excellent shot blocker with good timing, he's great at sealing his man in the post. that's what came off the top of my head. You don't become a McDonaldn's all american at age 16, then improve every year over a four year career in college and become the Big 12 player of the year if you aren't incredibly skilled.
Jeff Withey had a similar college resume.

I think Dok WILL for sure get minutes this year. I think he is ready and is that good already. Come'on with small ball as the default 2nd unit for most teams, he would destroy the opposition.

There are wings that are ready to play and it is easier to think they could contribute immediately and potentially be a starter level player later.
Just out of curiosity, how confident are you that all these late round wings are going to pan out as well as you think? You talk about them as though they are a sure thing. I honestly don’t watch college basketball so have no idea if any of these guys, including the ones we picked, are any good. If you had the pick at 27 (or even at 23), who was your pick?

Desmond Bane... Bey and Woodard are also solid bets. If you want to corner me into picking one guy (which is fair) I will choose Bane.

I’m not sure they will hit but they have an easier path to playing time and when you hit on a wing it’s a much bigger hit than just a pure center.

Oh you mean like we did with Tony ****ing Bradley? It was fun watching people churn through excuses on that one, but it's more fun that we can all just accept that that whole ordeal was just clown shoes.
We traded Josh Hart and Thomas Bryant for Tony Bradley. Just let that sink in for a bit.

As a Udoka homer, I’m already on record that if he doesn’t start getting minutes this season, it was a bad pick. One of the reasons this was a great pick is that he make can an impact now.
Exactly, like how Conley was brought in to make an impact right away, instead of "figuring out the new system"

Drafting a wing wouldn't help for a year or two and even then it's a gamble a late 1st will ever help. We need help there now. FA is a much better way to address this need than the draft.
So you'd rather have Niang than drafting a wing? That's exactly what we did last year

I get Udoka. We addressed our biggest defensive need with Rudy 2.0 coming off the bench. Makes sense.

But a first round draft pick gets you a starter in the league right now and most of us think we could have drafted Udoka at #38. Why not #23 and Ed Davis for Josh Richardson or Ricky Rubio or Kelly Oubre or any number of starters that have flown around and then simply a future second for #38 or #39 to grab Udoka.

There are few teams that wanted Udoka at all.. we reached for him. Thats all.
Philly needed a shooter and traded Richardson and a pick for Curry. OKC received a potential first round 2021 pick and a 15 million dollar trade exception for Oubre. Phoenix got Chris Paul for Rubio and Oubre, and then OKC got the 17th pick in the draft for him. In short, 23 and Davis doesn’t get us any of those players, not to mention the money is nowhere close to matching for any of them.

Also, unless everyone knows something I don’t, why is everyone so confident Udoka would have been available at 38 or 39? If the Jazz were confident of that don’t you think they would have? They either would rather have him on a rookie deal for 4 years instead of 2, had reason to believe someone else was going draft him between 27 and 38, or both.

Then why couldn't they just hold onto the #23 pick then take that Minny deal of 25 and 33? If they weren't sure if Azu was gonna be there at 38 then what about 33? I'm sure the confidence level is gonna be much higher.
