Jazz sign Ryan Thompson

Here is a question for the CBA experts. Can the Jazz sign Thompson to a multi year deal later this year or can it be at most a 1 year deal like Matthews ended up getting? Providing the Jazz like what they see, it would suck to lose him after this year to some rich owner with no conscience of paying the luxury tax.

I'm assuming he's signed a one-year non-guaranteed deal. There is nothing in the CBA to stop teams signing players to multi-year non-guaranteed deals, but I can't see that happening. That's because, even if it was a two-year deal, it wouldn't make any difference, at the end of the deal he becomes a RFA, can be offered a deal up to the MLE, and we can only match using our MLE money. A three-year deal would be different, then we'd have full Bird rights and wouldn't have to use our MLE to match any offer.

Having signed his deal, it stays in force until it expires or he's waived, so we can't sign him to another deal later this year unless we waive him first, in which case anyone can sign him.

I'm certain that if any of the games are against Miami, then they will be on TV.

Paul Westphal collectively through his summer league guards under the bus after Vegas was over. Thompson was one of them and the point guard from Boston College that played for us in Orlando was another.

I didn't see many shots in that vid, if any, that will translate into quality NBA shots. He looks too slow for the NBA to me. Most of those drives would be shut down at the first step, and most threes would be tightly contested. He'll probably be way too slow back peddling on defense as well. Wes Mathews was able to body up and play close to overcome great first steps. That's not something very many NBA players can do on the wing.

It looks like he has a great shot. I was also impressed with his ability to turn difficult positions into make-able shots. He was crafty at times. I just don't see most of it working against faster, taller, more athletic, older players. I hope I'm wrong. Let's see how it goes.

Hopefully the fact that there are two "t"s in matthews and playing close is the last way to defend quickness means Thompson will be fine.

Even though he's listed as a swingman, did you know he can also play point guard?

I don't see him playing PG, but you can't have too many players that are willing and able to make plays for others.
