Jazz to actively pursue Paul Millsap this offseason, per Spencer Checketts

Jazz tried to trade for David Lee before the trade-deadline. So is it safe to assume the Jazz would be willing to pay Millsap at least up to 15.5 million?

We would have to renounce all non-guaranteed players in order to make it work(including his brother). I think we can give him about 14.5-15 without renouncing his brother.

Here's article about it. Doubts it will happen as Millsap will get max money and I can't see Hawks letting him walk.

Perhaps the biggest thing in the way of the Jazz signing Millsap is their inability to offer him a max contract unless significant salary shredding moves are made. According to Basketball Insiders, even if the Jazz release all of their non-guaranteed contracts (including Millsap's brother Elijah), the Jazz would only have $16.6 million in cap space. Paul Millsap's max contract would start at somewhere around $18.6 million. If another team would be willing to offer Millsap a max deal, and there are indications that they would, Millsap would have to give the Jazz a discount in order to sign in Utah.

In other words, I think Millsap signing with the Jazz is pretty unlikely. I predicted in my column last week that Millsap would stay with the Hawks, Instead, I suspect the Jazz use their salary space more conservatively: on a wing player to play alongside Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks and Rodney Hood, or on a upgrade at the 3rd big position (just not one that's All-Star sized).

Based on way Lee has been playing in the Finals (even in limited minutes) I wouldn't mind him in a Jazz uniform and I'm guessing he wouldn't mind a change of scenery for a consistent role as the 3rd big.

Paul is not the missing piece to a championship team. This is rumor-mongering and nothing more.

At least it better be. If that is the free agent we are targeting we are setting our sights pretty damn low.

No offense Paul. I like you and all but. Damn.

I could see this happening if...

....the Jazz have a deal to trade Favors to the Knicks for the #4 pick, where they'll get a young big like Porzingis. Then they'll want a vet PF to start while we bring Porzi along for a couple years.

Knicks then have Favors and Carmello to attract FAs.

I'm sure this has been mentioned at least somewhere past page 2, but Favors and Gobert desperately need a 4 who can spread the floor for them. Millsap is the perfect compliment while not sacrificing defense like picking up someone of David Lee's character.

Except that I'm not sure it's worth paying Sap 12-million/year to come off the bench. Millsap may not want to come off the bench either, given that he's been an All Star...

If we're really going to pursue Millsap, it seems to signal that the Jazz have a deal to trade Favors for a top-5 pick in this draft and we need a PF to start for a couple years to bring this new guy along slowly. So who would be this young, raw awe-inspiring PF that would make us willing to trade Favors and bring in another PF so he can develop? It would have to be Porzingis.

I'd pay around 12-14 M for Paul for 3 years... think he gets offered more and I don't think he's worth it. Loved Millsap... still root for him, but I don't want to be in the business of paying him the max and I highly doubt we'd bench Favors for him. Would Paul come off the bench.

This is a stupid rumor... It doesn't make sense at all.
