Jazz trade Devin Harris to Atlanta for Marvin Williams (merged)

So, IMO, this is our 2012-2013 depth chart as it sits right now:

PG: Maurice Williams, Jamaal Tinsley, Earl Watson
SG: Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks, Kevin Murphy
SF: Marvin Williams, Demarre Carroll, Paul Millsap
PF: Derrick Favors, Paul Millsap, Jeremy Evans
C: Al Jefferson, Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors

obviously we needed one less PG and at least one more quality wing, so i'm not going to bitch too heavily about mo's style until the fall when there's actually a body of work to bitch about. i will say that marvin is better than a "fringe NBA starter" or whatever the hell somebody said -- fringe NBA starter is what 2012 josh howard was. marvin is 10 and 5 with above average defense for his position.

So the Jazz got another player who was a lotto pick and just like that.
Where are all of you who were whining about Jazz missing out on a middle first round pick by making the playoffs? It is quite likely that all we would have gotten was another Marv Williams-like player with that pick, but only more raw and wet behind the ears.

Not that Iam absolutely thrilled with getting Marv but some people must realize that there are other ways of getting a lotto pick besides actually drafting one, if thats all they want.
 
I remember back in 05 when Stew Scott asked Williams if he'd be able to come straight out and put up 20 and 10 on the board for the then horrid Atl Hawks, just forgot the answer.

Since then, Marvin has become a pretty good NBA player, not in any way worth the 2nd pick... but he helped Atlanta night in and night out.


I was actually hoping we'd get Marvin Williams one day, hey it happened.

And Marvin also replaces the Williams we drafted in the 05 Draft, a pick below him. SO STRANGE.

Or we could have filled our two biggest needs by getting Barnes and Kendall Marshall (by getting both GS' pick and landing in the #13 spot instead of Phoenix).

Then we would have kept Harris until at least the deadline and given Marshall time to learn the offense (about 15 mins/per). And perhaps made an offer to J. Howard to start at SF until Barnes was ready. Yes, as much as I lauded the trade, I would have taken the draft scenario over being swept by SA and losing out on our pick, which was probably several places higher in this year's draft than it will be next year.

Now, we're likely to be better this season and our draft pick may end up around 20 or so, the range where you get an Almond, Koufos or Maynor - i.e. a backup at best, but just as likely to be a fringe player for the life of his rookie contract.

Hopefully it doesn't matter. We'll have cap space and probably a couple of picks next season, perhaps around #10 if GS improves just marginally. So maybe we still get a good PG and a decent SF or defensive center in the draft, free agency or via trade.

I think that's a good and fair assessment... If he can apply all those skills on our team I'll be very very happy.

Barnes probably wouldn't have been there at 8.
 
I am on-board with getting Marvin. He has a very high release on his 3 point shot, which makes it almost impossible to block. Hope he can continue where he left off last season.

He can get out on the fast break, which along with Mo Williams and Hayward will be pretty to watch.

During the playoffs when the game becomes more of a half court game he can help us when they try to pack it in with his 3 pointers and as a shot blocker/shot changer in close. He will really help when we go to a zone defense, with his length.

I believe over-all we are the most athletic Jazz team ever. Just waiting to see what we can get with Al being traded, or with the cap money it will open up if he is allowed to expire.

I now firmly believe that O'Conner was held back badly by Sloan on making changes to improve our team. Color me excited for the Jazz future.
