Keefe, ostertag, Carr would struggle defensively as well.

There are a lot of players who couldn’t even play in today’s NBA. The jazz would probably shift players over, make Malone play the 5 and maybe put Shandon Anderson at the 4, Bruss/Morris 3/2, and Stockton at the 1. But that would leave them with zero rim protection.

The bulls would have to retool their roster as their Longley/Brian Williams (Bison Dele) would be too stiff and Rodman’s lack of shooting would allow teams to focus on stopping Jordan and Pippen. Jackson might adjust by inserting some shooting with Kerr and Kukoc playing bigger roles. He might even go small by putting Kukoc or Rodman in at center. But then that would allow teams to put Kerr in the blender and kill the Bulls with their lack of rim protection and rebounding. Gobert would abuse the Bulls.

The game is just so much faster, skilled, and free flowing now.

1997 ... now that would be interesting. This team is definitely more athletic. But I don't think Rudy is going to stop the Mailman and Stock will pick them apart.

The 2008 team couldn't make a clutch defensive stop if their collective lives depended on it. Even though they brought the Lakers to 5 games in the playoffs I never thought for one second the series was winnable - whenever Kobe or Gasol needed a basket they got one or got free throws 90% of the time. Props to Coach Sloan, once again, for getting this team to finish 12th in defensive rating when they were clearly a bottom third talent defensively.

I think the present day Jazz team would have trouble with the Okur/Williams pick and pop (everybody did). Memo would fill it up against this team.

On the other hand I can't see how the 2008 team would be able to deal with the present team's spacing. Having to ask Boozer and Okur to cover that kind of ground on switches is a non-starter. The present day team would win 7 out of 10 times.

I'm not even going to bother comparing the present day team with the 97 team - you're practically talking about two different sports.

I think mailman wouldn’t have much problem tearing Gobert a new one. Malone could shoot, drive, and post up.

I do think Stockton would struggle more against today’s athleticism. Conley would be a tough matchup. And if we wanted we could put Mitchell at the 1. Anyone else here have concerns with Stockton guarding Mitchell?

Yes but not many can stay in front of Mitchell. Stockton got most of his steals pickpocketing from the blindside on a quick sneaky double team. Stockton could also get you in foul trouble. He pulled cassel down on top of him and they called the charge on alien Sammy Stockton’s basketball Smarts was equal to jordan

On paper the 2019-2020 Jazz team is the best ever. And it’s not even close. This team is loaded with athletes and insanely skilled players. Their defense should remain top notch while they’ve added top talent offensive players. Chemistry, injuries, and their weakness at the 4 position are the only questions I have.

In a vacuum, they are better on paper but in a dream match-up with rules adjusted to level the playing field, I’m not picking against the 97 team.

I look at it this way: The 97 team was hands down better than every single team in the NBA with the exception of Jordan’s Bulls, which many will argue was the best team of all-time. I wouldn’t go as far as to blame officiating in costing us a championship in 98, but I’d definitely say that it cost us a shot at a Game 7 in SLC, with a good likelihood that the Jazz prevail. That 97-98 team was good enough to beat quite possibly the greatest team in NBA history.

I also don’t remember Boozer struggling with Odom, and if he did, it would’ve been because of his athleticism.

If anything I think Boozer struggled more with Gasol than with Odom.

No ****ing kidding. Malone was no joke. He went through anyone who stood in his way and anyone who thought they would just stand stronger ended up hurt. Malone was a powerful man, and while I loved it then I have my issues with it now, but he would straight up hurt you if you tried to make a point of getting in his way.

Gobert is amazing. Gobert should have 3 or 4 DPOYs by now. But if you think Gobert would make Malone look like the paperboy, I'm sorry, but Malone would end Gobert's season and alter his career if he tried to do that. That's who Malone was. Sloan had exactly the two individuals he needed to run his kind of basketball, and that was take no prisoners, show no mercy, never surrender basketball. Nothing like it has existed before or since. On Paper? Doesn't take an expert to realize that "on-paper" means nothing. Look at the current NBA Champs Toronto Raptors. On paper, they should've lost. Look at Cleveland 2016 Championship, on paper, they should've lost. On paper means nothing. I watched the late 90's Jazz teams. I watched the late 80's Jazz teams. On paper means nothing. Stockton hold the record for the most career assists and steals of anybody in NBA history. Do you think he got that from playing really bad teams for 20 years? Do you think the Jazz just luck'd into that? They faced no competition? Malone is the 2nd all time scoring leader in NBA history. He did this in the 80's and 90's when there was not only a plethora of talent in the NBA but also defense was the primary focus. You say "it's not even close". entertain me. Please! Please tell me about a time I watched and you didn't because you were a delicate baby. Please tell me. I need your knowledge!! Tell me about the time that you were being breastfed and couldn't remember the Jazz team you speak of, but now that you have the internet to look at numbers, you find it's not even close. Amen. I think a lot of fanz don't realize that it wasn't uncommon for Malone to deliver stitches during those days in the midst of his defense. And when he did, it wasn't a huge suspension like it is now. Elbows were apart of the game back then, dirty or not. Isaiah Thomas got multiple stitches across the eye because of Malone. Malone threw elbows at Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, Charles Oakley, Steve Nash, Michael Jordan (Late 80's No foul called) David Robinson, among others. Anyone thinking that Gobert (in his best season) with his 15 PPG and 12 RPG, 406 games played for his career, is going to chew up Malone with his 18 year career average of 25 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.4 SPG over 1,476 games played during his 18 year career, is smoking crack. Malone played during the defensively strong 80's and 90's. Before the 3 pt hoist was accepted. If Malone was rebounding 40 3 pt attempts per game, he would've snatched Wilt Chamberlain like rebounds.
