I don't think the source has the above correct. Most leagues/teams in Europe pay the player's taxes, and it was reported that part of the reason he was considering leaving was because he wanted 2.2 million, and that would cost the team close to 6 million with the tax hit.
I highly doubt he went from threatening to come to the U.S. if he didn't pocket 2.2 million, then gladly accepted a lot less than that.
I'd bet he will pocket 2.5-3 million after taxes, which means it's a 5-6 million dollar deal.
Man, he must have not wanted to come to Utah as I would be pretty certain that his deal with the Jazz would have been more than $2.2m. I would have guessed he would get in the $5m+ range per season to come over, similar to what Mirotic got. His wife must really like Spain as he left about $10m on the table.
