Joe Ingles: Article on Son's Autism Diagnosis

What is it, 1 in 20 kids now? There's a lot of research going on in this sphere, I reckon Jacob's biggest problem will be that he looks like his dad.

beautiful article too.
It's not that more kids are getting it, it's that the spectrum of autism has significantly widened and and diagnosis has become easier

yeah i agree but i also get the feeling its over diagnosed. I have no evidence for this and i know nothing about raising kids but you know maybe a lot of these kids are just, you know, Germans and don't like talking to people. i got family like that, Germans.

Someone at the State Legislature should sponsor a private bill to close Utah borders to the Ingles family. People need to know they won't leave the State, ever.

I have six kids and I’m still amazed that I don’t have one with autism. On top of that, I have a total of 13 nieces and nephews. None with autism, though some are still too young to know (babes in arms young). A miracle.

In runs in families. 3 of my 5 have issues somewhere on the autism spectrum.

My oldest son is an extrovert with autism spectrum issues. He works at TJMaxx a few hours a weeks, goes to baseball and hockey games, etc. My youngest is also enjoys being around people. Autism is about sensing the world in a different way than most people do, AFAICT.

I had the honor of working with a few students on the spectrum when I worked in higher education. The main thing I noticed about them was their constant sense of positivity. They were always so happy and brought joy to those around them. Their "normal" was perfectly fine for them.

Hopefully as we get further and further into the science of it all, I hope all "normal" people learn from their positive outlook on life. The world would be a better place if we did.

There is something unique about autistic kids in a mysterious way. I had a client who had autistic kid. Once he left a drawing in a waiting room full of zombies, flying saucers and blood dripping message written in the sky - "Government is watching you".

Agreed. I had an autistic kid about five years ago at school. Smartest kid in the class. Polite. Not weird in any way. Got good grades. Just quiet. **** man, I was really quiet too as a kid. I was often intimidated without meaning to be. We all have different social curves and I think this kid maybe had one but was marked Autistic because hey, it’s easier for the parents or schools, depending, to explain him. Which sucks and is ******** for that kid and ones like him.
