John Stockton - The Ultimate Point Guard

I hate watching 'The Shot'. I get so happy and then so bummed in a matter of a couple of seconds.

thanks for the comments guys, this was probably the most work i put into a mix as far as gathering all the highlights from those games. a lot tougher than editing nba.com highlights, with this I was watching entire retro jazz games, but it was worth it.

It is amazing to see just how many moves Stockton actually had!

....how did you like THIS move he used one time while playing in the AND1 league?!!!

He was definitely a magician with the ball...even in stockton's prime Dwill is twice the athlete but that Stock just knows what to do with the ball, at all times...How many clutch game winners did he have in that clip alone? I can only remember 1 or 2 from Dwill so far

The movie speaks for itself... but I'll talk a little anyway.

1. Look who he scored on (not just MJ, but all of 'em).

2. How was he able to put up quality shots at the very last moment? Deciding what to do at the last moment and still doing it well is what made Stockton so great. It's easy to decide in advance and do it. It's hard to hold out until your opponent has no choices left, read what he does, then finish the way Stockton does. That's a chess champion ombined with sheer athleticism.

3. Stockton was more athletic than D-Will is. Sometimes he doesn't get credit because the currently accepted definition of athleticism seems to require fluid movement. I disagree. An ability to make extremely quick adjustments makes the best hitters in baseball, and it made John Stockton great.

4. As to not diminish D-Will: D-Will is the best point guard in the league while still improving. He's quite possibly the most competitive player in the league. His drive and desire to excel impress me as much as anyone else's, including Stockton's and Malone's. Let's hope he becomes as great as John Stockton became.

Phil Jackson frequently put Jordan on Stockton to try and stop him, that speaks volumes on how effective Stockton really was

For Old Time’s Sake: John Stockton

John Stockton is a legend. He holds the records for most career assists (15,806) AND steals (3,265) and he averaged a double double over his career (13.1 points, 10.5 assists). Drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 16th pick in the ‘84 draft, Stockton spent his entire career in Utah before retiring in 2003. He and Karl Malone are one of the most dominant tandems in NBA history and they ran the pick and roll better than anyone ever has. Stockton was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history, was a 10x All Star, and part of the original Dream Team that smoked the competition in the 1992 Olympics. Stockton only missed 22 games in his entire career and 18 of them were in one season. Like many greats of his generation (Ewing, Malone, Barkley, Miller, Wilkins etc…), Stockton never won a championship. The Jazz fell victim to the Bulls in both the ‘97 and ‘98 Finals. Stock may have not looked the part but damn was he good.
