Game Thread Jul 09, 2024 07:00pm: Thunder Vs Jazz (Summer League)

Added to Calendar: 07-09-24

For having such a "low motor," Williams seems pretty aware defensively, makes his rotations, and generally stays in front of his man. Defense is generally the best judge of effort.
i don't want to be seen as a "hater" because i'm not - rather just calling it like i see it, but if i'm honest, i have seen the opposite. i think he's looked horrendous defensively. in terms of moving his feet, staying in front of people, and just getting bullied. granted Collier and Flip have been just as bad, probably worse.

for me in particular, especially as it relates to cody williams, i had him ranked the late 20s on my big board - i was on an island on jazzfanz and in terms of basically every draft expert in that opinion. so i'm watching these games hoping for signs that i completely missed on him, and instead i'm going all Dennis Green - he is who i thought he was - maybe even a little more negative now - i knew he wasn't explosive, but he's looked even slower and more grounded than i thought. so it's not about two games in summer league, it's a continuation of what i saw at CU. still hoping at some point this summer he shows some of the skills others saw that i didn't see.
Ok, but what are your thoughts on Cody Williams? Yay or nay?

not sure what williams is supposed to be good at. he's slow, slow release, not sure he can shoot (today was the first time in 6 months that he's looked for his shot and was crap), gets killed defensively - doesn't move his feet, gets bullied, lacks lateral quicknes - despite his length is mostly a below the rim player who lacks explosiveness, doesn't make plays for teammates, doesn't rebound his position, is passive, can't get to the FT line (because he's so slow and can't - or won't - play an aggressive style). he's just 19, so he has time, but the slow release, the lack of aggression, lack of quickness and lack of explosiveness may never change - and this is just carried over from the player he was the last couple months of the college season. he's just meh in pretty much every aspect. 7 points (on 10 shots) 1 reb, in 30 minutes. it's hard to watch. rooting for the young guy, but i'm just not seeing the upside.
This is what I saw as well. Very passive. Very slight frame. Pushed around a ton.
He can dribble and drive but didn't pop. Nothing burger stats. Defensively was lost.

His only redeeming value right now is time is on his side and he has a development coach.

PS. I was there last night. That was the worst summer league game I have seen in the last decade. Uninspiring. Terrible defense. 1 dunk? Missed shots galore. 54 points late in the 3rd. A lot of 1 v 5 play. I brought my kids and felt embarrassed that this is what Jazz basketball is now days.

Brice has such an advanced offensive bag he’s very fun to watch. Just need him to become a passable defender and we really got something with him.
Brice will be playing in Spain in 5 years (probably making more money than he would in the NBA). He's skilled, but also small and slow, which is a combo that just kills you in the league.
