What's new

Kanter did work.

Kanter's on the ball defense has been his best trait so far. He is difficult to back down and moves his feet very well even 15' out on the floor. He is also blocking 1.4 shots per 36 minutes which is more than anyone probably thought. I recall several "enlarged Boozer" comparisons before the draft.

I think Boozer was considered a good/decent defender as a rookie and early on in his career.

I don't get why Kanter dribbles every time he gets the ball under the rim. Refs don't call travel in NBA like they do in Europe. He should get rid of it. It allows defenders to gather themselves.

One knock on him from before the draft, he does not keep the ball high or play above the rim. These things are true. But hopefully he can learn to stop gathering the ball the way he does and just put it back in. Kanter will never play above the rim but the fight in him and the will to compete is going to be a huge advantage. From what I've seen this kid has that competitive edge that really characterizes the guys who make a real impact.

Everyone needs to remember that Kanter is a KID. He is nineteen and basically hasn't played organized ball for almost two years. He had no training camp while still adjusting to the speed and athleticism of the NBA. He has good form on his jump shot. He just isn't that confident yet or perhaps he is a little unsure considering he know he is going to get yanked most night regardless if he plays well. He has only been getting like 12 minutes a game.

I have no doubt he is going to get better. In two or three years people are going to feel foolish for doubting his abilities. I do not think he will be a great offensive player unless he develops a jump shot and a baby hook shot. However, I think with 30+ minutes a game he can average 12+ rebounds a game. He might even go higher. He will have several 20 rebound games. The kid can flat out rebound.

Can anyone look up stats for Kanter's defensive post possessions? I would be interested in those #'s.

Kanter is very skilled and will learn to score against the length and athleticism of NBA bigs. Remember he last played competitive ball against high school competition where he was bigger, taller, and stronger than everyone he went up against. Think Marc Gasol as far as the development of his offensive game goes...although Kanter is already a much better shooter than Gasol will ever be.

It is okay if he does things in his own way. Not everyone succeeds by doing the same thing everyone else does. Look at Marion's shot, the worm's rebounding, as examples.

Maybe he needs to bring the ball down more, because that works for him.

Maye Hayward needs to take the shots he is comfortable taking, not the ones others tell him to take.... etc.

Sure he gets a little lost/confused with PnR defense, but overall I've been really impressed with his lateral quickness to stay with the PG and force him baseline. He runs up and down the floor like a goof, but he looks really quick for a guy his size on the defensive end.

Eff. FG% on jumpers from this season from 82games.com.: Gasol .435%, Kanter .305%. FT - .727% vs 714%.
Now, I get all the love for Kanter but lets not make silly statements like that.
