KOC did make this Mistake.

Do you think we should have re-signed Matthews?

I like KOC but we honestly should have matched the offer sheet to keep Wes Matthews. He shoots 40% from three and he plays hard nosed defense. KOC said that the biggest mistake he ever made as a GM was letting MO Williams go. on the contrary, I think it was letting Wes Matthews go. 6.5 million a year is pretty good for a player of his calibar. I Think having Wes Matthews to go along with our other young guys would have been nice. What do you think? A lineup of Burks, Matthews and Hayward to close out games would actually be pretty nice, imo. Discuss.

Have you heard of the luxury tax? If you want to get mad at decisions, get mad at the completely unnecessary Memo extension and the Jazz refusal/failure to trade AK. Besides that, nobody but Portland thought Matthews was a full MLE player, and nobody but Portland thought their decision made any sense. **** Portland, but on this one, they rolled the dice and won. The Jazz were up against a wall and even though they definitely made the wrong call in regards to Matthews and Jefferson (which are not separate issues) IN HINDSIGHT, they weren't making an ill-advised gamble (even pretty much hating Jefferson already, myself) AT THE TIME.

You can only make decisions based on where you are at the time. The Jazz were not in a good place. And that's why you never offer unnecessary extensions to players over 30.

So the Jazz should have signed an undrafted rookie, who had 1 solid, not great, but solid season to a full MLE. That seems irrational, I mean Portland got lucky as hell, but that was a big risk.

It's not much of a defense in hindsight, but, they mistakenly thought that Raja Bell could provide the same 3pt shooting and hard nosed defense at a fraction of the cost.

You sound pretty up set about the Memo extension. As far Wes goes, I have always been of the Mindset that his play in the Playoffs against Denver, especially his defense on Anthony, merited him the MLE. Essentially, I think the Jazz should have done what was possible to retain him. At that point, we already knew he was better than CJ or any 2 we had for that matter.

It was a frontloaded contract. Even though it's only around 6m now, Portland paid him 9m his first season, thus making the offer toxic to Utah for the 2010/11 season.

I remember being upset about losing Matthews, but this wasn't simply letting an undrafter player walk. Kid got paid and we couldn't afford him.

His solid season as well as his play against Denver and LA in the playoffs earned him the MLE. As i remember it, we did not even make him an offer. We should have been a little more aggresive there.

When someone comes in and offers probably more than double what you were going to offer, you gotta step back and wish him the best. In hindsight every single person on here would love to have him, but at the time, with the given information, it would not have been a prudent decision.

Letting Matthews go led to all chain of events - Sloan quiting, Deron trade, etc, etc. If we had resigned Matthews we may never have Kanter, Burks and Corbin as a coach. Who knows what scenario is better? I would love to have Matthews on our team, no question, dude was a warrior and a pleasure to watch.

I wish we would have resigned him. It was a toxic offer for the first few years, but the guy is a tough baller. He was way better than CJ. I was sad to see him go. I can see why we didn't with our money situation, however we never should have signed AK and Memo to those deals. However, Matthews has had his struggles in Portland. All my buddies are blazer fans and sometimes he can turn into a chucker and be really ineffective...but overall I wish we had him, especially when we still had CJ

He has lived up to his contract, but has not exceeded it. Hardly a franchise changing mistake, I probably would have never thought about it again if it wasn't brought up on this forum time to time.

It's one of the worst decisions this organization has made since Humphries (then giving up on him and trading him for pure crap) and Snyder. It was a bad, wholly unnecessary move at the time, and it basically chained the Jazz down in that offseason. Wes Matthews/Raja Bell is the direct consequence saying nothing of the arguable and subsequent consequences from that (Al? The implosion of the team?).

Agree, Hartsock. Matthews had a decent season, not great, and then struggled in the playoffs. Due to the luxury tax, Utah would have been paying $10M+ on a complete roll of the dice. Even without the tax, the full MLE was a HUGE leap for an undrafted player. Wes was making more in his 2nd season than a #1 pick. NO ONE thought an offer like that would ever be made and everyone except Portland thought they were absolutely crazy. Of course, now we know why they were so desperate for a SG; they already knew Roy's career was over.
