What's new

Kyle Weaver

Kyle Weaver was an interesting invitation to summer league. Will he get invited to fall camp? It seemed like he was there for no reason because we have a ton of guys that can play his position unless there is a trade in the offing then it would make sense to invite him to camp and give him a shot to make the team.

No "extras" invited to camp will have much of a chance at making the roster. To do so means the Jazz would need to release an additional player, cut Murphy or Carroll, or go with 15 players. I don't see any of those scenarios as likely: the Jazz, by all reports, were impressed by Murphy's shooting in SL practices, Carroll showed some good intensity and defense last year in limted minutes, and the Jazz like to go with just 14 players in case of 2-1 trade opportunities.

But they will have around 17-18 players in camp. They need that many for scrimmages. And one of the "extras" is usually a fourth PG. In case of injuries or later trades, someone could get a call later on, just like Ahearn did. Every agent knows the Jazz already have 14 players under contract (and Murphy will replace Braille on that list), so Utah won't be the preferred destination for any decent rookie FA's.

Ex Jazz Kyle Weaver is on Memphis camp roster. He was scoreless with 0-3 shooting and 2 steals in 8.23 of playing time in a 4 point loss to the Bulls. Memphis was +2 when he was on the floor.

You love those ex Jazz scrubs don't you? But while we're on the subject, CJ Miles scorched the Bucks yesterday for 18 in 22 minutes, hitting 4/7 from downtown. Cavs probably think they have something special

Other people of interest: Jeffers 2 points, Korver 9, Yatta 4 points, Ahearn 0, AK 3 points, Ronnie Price 2 points, Wesley Matthews 10 points, Jimmer 10 points Lilliard (ex Weber player) 14 points, Sasha Pavolic 3 points and Adam Morrison 9 points on 4-6 shooting. Price, Wesley, Lilliard, Morrison are on the Portland Roster.

In 2010-11 played 5 games for the Jazz and averaged 5.6 ppg in about 13 minutes of PT and then was waived. He was drafted in the same draft class as Rush. These averages would have made him a super star among our reserves this past year. What was his problem? No D, locker room cancer?

I think he was a twiner in the sense that they were trying him at PG but he wasn't really a PG and he can't shoot well enough to be a SG. I think he was actually a strong defensive player.

Jazz getting to the point where making the roster is going to be tough:
Assuming Hayward reaches a deal, that makes 7 guaranteed contracts:

Guaranteed: Favors, Kanter, Hayward, Burke, Burks, Evans, Gobert.
Rookie Additions: #4 pick, #23 pick, #35 pick, Neto.
Likely Returnees: Williams, Garrett
Likely Cut: JLIII, Thomas, Clark (partially guaranteed deals)
Unknown: Erik Murphy

Unlikely the Jazz bring in all their picks, though. Perhaps draft and stash with at least one. Or trade GS and 2nd-round pick and cap space for a veteran. Won't be worrying too much about D-League players, IMO. With the youth the Jazz have, I think Lindsey will try to bring in a couple of good veterans (including Marvin) to strengthen the team. And no, I don't think it will be a GS situation this time.
