Lessons from SA Spurs? Thoughts?

Because of these comments, I'd bench Al for this game if I was the coach. In fact, I'd tell him not to suit up at all... in fact, I'd tell him to gtfo out of the arena, go find a scalper, and pay for a ticket if he loves the Spurs so much. If it was possible and the Spurs would do it, which I know they wouldn't because Pop isn't a ****ing idiot, I'd trade Al for Bonner right now and watch Favors lead this team to a 4-0 sweep of the Spurs. KOC better ****ing lose this guy this off-season, or I'm going to be pissed!!!

Not blasted by me. However, I will say they're better than pure scrubs. Diaw and Jackson especially are very skilled.

Funny thing is Big Al could probably dominate with San Antonio because of all the shooters they have.

Maybe so.

That is, if Al decided to listen to Pop and Duncan when they told him not to kill the offense by standing still, pump-faking 4-5 times, and not once looking to pass.

Absolutely not, because the Spurs no longer play "stand-around while one guy posts up" basketball. The majority of Duncans' points now come off screen-roll and the high-post, not low-post. Big picture the Spurs are about spacing, ball&player movement, 1 big screening and the other diving to the rim. It's about running screen-roll on one side of the court, swinging it weakside and running another one while the defense is completely off-balance. Defensively, the Spurs are about team-defense - effort and awareness. Look at their ball denial on the wing. Little things like that force you to catch the ball a step or two further out where you're used to, and that takes you out of your comfort zone and the flow of your own offense, and they're players have the luxury of overplaying because they have faith in their help-defense. As potent as their offense has been, their defense agains the Jazz has been equally as impressive. None of that meshes with what Al Jefferson does, which is looking to score on the left-block.

We all knew going into this series that the Jazz would be lucky to win 1-2 games. What has frustrated me the most is how conservative Corbin has been with his line-ups knowing our chances with the Spurs. I was hoping to see Corbin take some chances with our young guys. Instead he starts Howard who hadn't played 19 games...WTF? I don't want to see Howard, Bell, CJ, Harris, Al, Carroll, or Sap in the near future.

...nobody on the Spurs is a "scrub." They all contribute with either athletic ability and basketball brains.....or basketball brains! That contribution is lethal....in a league that is dominated by dumb butt players! The Spurs are going to sweep the Jazz and then sweep whomever they play next and then win 4 of 5 from either the Lakers or the Thunder.....and then take out the eastern champs in a series that won't be close!
 
Watching the Spurs has taught me that points earned by a simple little screen and jumpshot are worth just as much as points earned from an elaborate motion offense.

Also, it is beautiful to watch a pass that is made before the guy is open, the spurs timing is incredible.

My favorite one so far. Rep'd.

In the last game through TNT's Trax I heard Pop saying the exact same thing to his team "ATTACK" - "SET HARD SCREEN".

Their bread & butter play is Duncan & Parker PnR top of the key with everyone else waiting at the 3pt line. THAT'S ALL!. Parker either roll to the basket and:

1) hit the floater
2) pass to a rolling Duncan with an empty paint
3) pass to one of the open 3pt shooter

A 2 man game that's un-guardable and you can do that play all day long. Even in a close game with 7 seconds to play.

...I love it when the Spurs call a time out....draw up a play.....and then run it to perfection!

Not only that - the big 3 are not even overly athletic or 'incredibly gifted'. I mean where would you rank Parker in the Best PG List? I'd rank him behind Paul, Rose, Westbrook and DWill. How about Ginobli? On the best SG/SF List I'd rank him behind Kobe, Wade, Pierce, LeBRon, Camelo, Durant, Harden. OK - Duncan is 'The Rock' of the team and he's a definite HOF, but he's getting old and not really that athletic anymore.

If Hayward & Favors develop & play to their potential, with a good coach & training staff, I can't see why we can't become competitive. Although we may get swept today, we should look to the Spurs as a source of inspiration for our future.

Mine is pretty simple. They have Duncan, Ginobli and Parker. 3 humble players who play fundamentally well and do the best they can in their given position. They're not flashy, or overly athletic. But they play to their full potential. They train hard during the offseason. They stick to their coach and system religiously. They play unselfishly.

That's what I think we could learn from them. We currently have 2 very talented young players in Favors and Hayward. Can they learn from Duncan and Ginobli respectively? If they can reach even just 85% of what Duncan and Ginobli can achieve, and may get KOC go get a solid young PG - I think we can become a pretty good team.

I think you overrating Hayward. He will never be as good as Ginobili.
