What's new

Living in Utah (near SLC)?

thanks for the quick responses guys...

damn, those inversions sound horrible & from your descriptions, i'm thinking of LA smog!! i thought people move towards the elevation for cleaner air??
the one thing i'd miss the most would be the shore!

It's a geographic problem and that we'll probably never be able to clean it up completely outside strict vehicle restrictions. Last winter was pretty good; this year awful.

I am more worried about my kiddies developing asthma or something.

Well, the air quality has steadily progressed over the last 50 years.

The best dirt golf courses in Utah....

Fixed.

Just remember it is unbearable in the summer and its ridden with dick hole college kids

Hey cool it...

Those are my students your talking about!!

Honestly the summers aren't that bad...

Go hit the lakes with your water toys or the virgin river to do skimboarding!!!!

Plus we just got a wakeboard park if you don't have a boat!!

The Ledges
SandHallow
Coral Canyon

SLC would get you amazing outdoor activities year round; the Jazz in your back yard; a pretty nice community of people; close location to Vegas if you want to spend a weekend there; and other unique things like the Sundance Film Festival every year. The night life obviously isn't great, but at least you're close to Vegas. I do my fair share of clubbing, but am only 20, so I can't say what any of the 21+ clubs are like here, but I'd say it's decent night life for the college crowd. Of course, the best parties (imo) in SLC are the ones the U of U throws, which I believe is only open to college students. But yeah, a quick trip to Vegas would help scratch your night life itch, if it turns out SLC just isn't cutting it for you.

Like another poster said.... the slc nightlife isn't that bad.... When i was single i was going out 3 nights of every week to portocall, bliss, liquid joes, green street, piper down, scallywags, sandy station, lumpys, hotel and many more.(plus southern, and trails occasionally ;))
I know that a few of those clubs are gone or changed now but there are still some good ones out there and if you want to bar hop without driving the hotel, lumpys, and poplar are all really close to one another.

The bad part of the summer is the unbearable heat. I freaking hate it. Weeks on end of high 90's to 100+. But like the others have said, you're only minutes from the mountains with their lakes and hiking/biking trails and only a couple hours from really great "roughing it" type camping.

No on the humidity.... and i would say that bigb has reasonable gripes about the summer heat, but i personally dont mind it..... I love summer nights in slc and like bigb said, you can beat the heat by going up in the mtns that surround us.
St george heat is too much for me though

What do you do (or want to do) professionally? Coming from Jersey, you're probably going to find SLC a quiet and quaint little town. It feels like a small town, even though it's spread out over 10+ miles.

If you're heading west, you're probably better off making all the way to California, unless outdoors stuff like skiing, hiking, biking, etc. are your thing.

The air quality from the inversion has been horrible this year, for a couple of weeks. But it's never been this bad before that I can remember in my ~9 years of living in Utah. And it depends where you live--I live in Utah County, and I'm pretty sure we don't generally get hit as hard with the inversions as the people in Salt Lake County.

And as many people said, the outdoor activities in the spring/summer/fall are fabulous.

I grew up in Maryland, and the heat there is FAR more unbearable than the heat here. For what it's worth.

I went on my mission to Honduras. The day I got off the plane it was like 85 with about 80% humidity. I totally get the humid heat thing. I still hate the dry heat though too.
