I do think that the public debate is a little extreme on both ends of the spectrum. The current public forum should shift away from questions that already have a definitive answer to more of a moral debate, which science simply cannot answer. An example of such a question would be "With the knowledge that global warming exists, and that global warming is a side-effect of modern society, how much change are we willing to incur as stewards to the environment and to our own rational human needs (strong economy, transportation, raw goods, etc.)?"

I think if a person were to honestly assess this question, it would surprise many of us how much common ground we would all have on this matter.

When we start running out of resources in the midst of an unprecedented environmental collapse, the denialists will fade to irrelevancy, and we will no longer be talking about "economic realities". The current system is deeply entrenched, and the populace were lulled into indifference through material comfort. It is too late for any meaningful reforms, and I do not care for forcing sustainability on a reluctant audience. A serious crisis is exactly what we need.

I agree, it is a terrible thing that we are using up resources at the rate we are.

But just how bad is global warming? The global average increase in temperature since the industrial revolution is 0.5 degrees Celsius. So what does that mean and how does it affect us? The winter climate of the North American continent is controlled the Pacific/North American climate oscillation system which can cause average temperatures to vary by up to 3 degrees Celsius, much more than the man-caused 0.5 degree increase. Remember that this is a natural climate system. El Nino, the North Atlantic Oscillation, and various monsoons have even more drastic effects on the global climate. They are also natural climate events.

Now that is not to say that human induced global warming has had no effect thus far. Obviously massive amounts of sea ice is melting in the Arctic, climate patterns are becoming more erratic, and ocean acidification is a real concern. But how does one rank these worries relative to world hunger, the floundering economy, healthcare, etc.

Like I said it's complex and not easily defined.

I see some really intelligent comments in here that telegraph to my perceptive social climate receptors that we've been over this issue about a zillion times already. Maybe I should get really serious and try to straighten you all out, once and for all.

But no, I see instead a great opportunity to expand the sphere of governance to ensure that all-wise, infallible scientists, social engineers, and UN-elite hangers-on will have unlimited scope for stepping in to do all the right things. We not only need to revolutionize our global carbon-based economic engines with new multi-trillion-dollar windfalls for the movers and shakers who have the foresight to know what the future of mankind should be by issuing novel forms of "wealth" like "carbon-credits", we should throw out even larger disruptions of ordinary commerce and power for the huge globally-sanctioned politically-useful, and equally-valid issues of global reality, global gravity, and global delusions of the outer space, which man is certainly having a huge negative impact on.

What I need to know is how I can personally put myself in a lucrative position to privately profit from all the gravity credits, space credits, and reality credits our world governance system needs to issue to correct these problems.

I just want to be as smart as Al Gore, OK????? Is that too much to ask????? In exchange for saving the world from mankind?????

It's not like we haven't used a lot of economic bubble fantasies before to allow progressive thinkers to get rich at the expense of the more timid and backward folks who just get in on a good thing at the wrong time.

You aren't hanging me on this false cross of conservation. We owe it to mother earth to release the trapped gasses inside her bowels. We owe it to the plants and animals who have been hurting for millennia. They need those trapped resources to survive and they need them now more than ever. I, for one, am committed to doing my part to save the environment.

Here's something from a genius who gets it:

Back in the day they found oil by bushwacking until they stumbled upon ponds of the black gold just laying out in the open. You think that was really so good for the environment, for the birds and fluffy little bunnies? A group of well intentioned folks saw the problem, brainstormed about it a bit, and figured a way to clean up the messes by making oil economical.

Same thing happened offshore. Oil slicks were EVERYWHERE. Too much pressure down in Mother's belly and she blows oil all over the ocean. The good folks of America, ya know the saints we always are, found a way to relieve the pressure. As a bonus, they created some awesome fish habitat in the process. More fish cultivation and less fish killed by the oil slick.

But these crazy *** environmental terrorists want us to stop cleansing the world of this nasty stuff all in the name of conservation. They aren't saving anything.
