For my taste, the place I would live in the Philippines would be Lingayen. . . . Not so far from some really nice beaches, some good parks like "Hundred Islands", and Baguio. Manila would be a day trip. . . . I don't think it's been developed for tourists. . . .

Second place would be a little burb of Cebu City. . . a few hours up the coast with ocean front. But then I haven't been on more than fifty of the seven thousand islands. . . . .

Lingayen sounds like a cool place!! I wonder why it hasn't been developed though? I'd have to ask my Philippino friend about that. Apparently she prefers to living in Thailand, I remembered her saying that it has more "energy" and a better "vibe".

Living in an island sounds cool on paper, except when you suddenly became sick and needed to get to a hospital FAST.

your friend is a "filipina". . . . probably feels a bit sidelined by the Catholic majority, assuming she's someone you'd meet in your church.

The Phillipine culture is intensely stratified on financial criteria, not so much on religious lines. There are strong nationalistic sentiments, as well as intense biases across local or language lines as well.

I found it curious that there were probably hundreds, if not thousands, of details that stood as standards which people had to comply with to maintain their "face". . . . girls would be ashamed to carry a paper sack in the street because it was deemed "low class conduct". . . . for example. . .

Americans were in most quarters accorded status as visiting Gods from the States. . . . where local perceptions held that our streets are paved with gold and we're all fantastically wealthy. . . .

I have tried to set that as a standard for my wife, but so far she has failed to appreciate my true status in the fabric of society. . . . . lol
 
nobody ever clicks on "previous page". . . . so if ya got something needing to be buried in a dark secret place forever, and never seen again. . . . just move on to a new page. . . .
