I think I'm pretty comfortable with Lyles over Booker.
Apart from Booker, who would we have rather taken? I'm just sad about narrowly missing out on Justise. Maybe Dekker?

Yeah, Booker was the only guy I preferred. Though I'm sure somebody could have sold me on Oubre (potential!) as well.
Lyles is soft. Absolutely nothing to do with Green in that respect(and defensively in general)... Offensively he might be able to be a playmaking 4. He runs the floor well(might speed up the pace a bit), has good feel for the game, makes nice reads and passes well, not sure how good his handle is.

One of the biggest needs on defense right now is guarding the pick and roll. Lyles has that agility to defend the pick and roll. Having 3 long bigs who can guard faster players while staying long is the key to a great defense.
Lyles offensive game will take time. His release is quick and smooth. I am not worried about his shot. The main rotation will be Favors, Gobert, and Booker. With Lyle playing spot minutes so we can see him develop.
He will be ready to play consistent minutes next year because of his basketball IQ.

People thought Exum was going to be a bad defender too.
No one thought Green was going to be at defense in the NBA.
One thing I take from all the Lyles interviews I hear are that he really sounds like he has 0 ego.
With Exum it was different. Exum has elite quickness and size - it was a question of him learning proper technique and desire to defend. Lyles doesn't have elite measurables. Exum's D was a question simply because he never had to defend at a serious level, not because his D has been tested and proven to be unable to defend. With Lyles it has been tested and it has been less than stellar. He isn't fast enough to guard 3 and he hasn't shown ability(or willingness) to fight for position in the post defensively.
Also, citing the exceptions to the rule is not really a good way to predict the future success of a prospect. You'd have better success by going with the majority of players that have had similar success defending in college. Of course he can improve tremendously and some day become a DPOY candidate, but lets be honest with ourselves - what do we really think is the chance of that happening?
