It's funny, before the draft there was only maybe two people who thought lyles was good. Now suddenly everyone seems to think he is great and is going to be doing all these amazing things, and that he is the steal of the draft, and would have dominated at Kentucky if he stayed for another year

You get picked in the lottery I think people automatically make assumptions when a lot of the time we just don't know.

In the small sample sizes i have, doesn't look too good defending around the rim. He's not a NBA SF. Average athletically, not a great shooter.

So if there was a case to be made for a player to spend another season in college I think it was Trey Lyles. I realize he ended up being a lottery pick, but that's about where Jakob was projected as well but he decided to stick around for another season I think he'll be better off because of it.

A contested long two is a bad shot, a wide open midrange is a very good shot if the player can make it at a high rate. The trick is getting the shot wide open rather than just settling.
 
If you can get drafted in the lottery, it is AWAYS better for your career to get drafted by a functional NBA team. The University of Utah is not going to develop a lottery talent player like the NBA will, they just don't have the same type of funding, nor does the student/player. If you are a marginal first round talent, it may be worth staying to improve your draft position. You noticed that I said "functional" NBA team. Getting drafted by a team like the Kings is the probable death of your career. Of course that is true if you come out later as well. . .

Sorry to sound crass but, who is Trey Lyles unknown to exactly??

He was a productive starter on one of the most visible college teams ever. He's got an amatuer resume that reads like many other 1 and dones... McDonalds All-American, he was Mr. Basketball in Indiana. An upper echelon 5 star player by all services. He got invited to all of the nationally televised showcase events like the Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoops Summit.

Listening to the Jazz f/o they're confident in their player development, so much so they prefer younger players to older ones. Seems safe to assume they've gone out of their way to peg a good project.. no?? If he's a good player NBA player right now is of minor consequence, I'd definitely argue he's a good enough project to get picked where he did.

The whole idea of turning down guaranteed millions and gambling on an injury just to develop more at the college level is completely ludicrous. I'm a big Ute fan and I'm glad for the team, but if you have a chance to be drafted in the lottery, take the damn money while you can, because there are no guarantees that opportunity won't disappear.

Why do people go to college? I mean outside of the beer, drugs and sex? Isn't it to get out of their parent's basement (unlike many of the posters on this board?). No, seriously, most go to college to get on a better career path. If you can get a guaranteed $3-$12M for 3 years, you DO IT!

Then if your career ends after a 3 year stint in the NBA you can always go back to college for a degree. And what a first job to put on a resume: pro basketball player for 3 years in the NBA. Any player who is a lock to go in the first round is an idiot to turn that down.

Last summer league was very indicative of what the players did in the regular season. Burke still sucked for his second SL. Exum played great defense but was invisible offensively. Gobert was a beast.
I'll definitely be paying attention to how Lyles looks at the 4 and 5 spots in SL.

Interesting. I hadn't thought about that, but SL really was predictive of what would eventually happen in the regular season with those three guys. Even Hood showed very good offensive potential and had some big games, but was inconsistent with his shooting.
