so the question we are discussing is

There is no excuse for lying to someone else.
 
in my opinion their is an excuse to lying.

but only when the consequences outweigh the consequences of lying. lying to save a live directly for example.

but the problem is you can justify that your lie is saving live(s). so i am not sure about this one in the test i had it at nuetral, because i just wke up and wanted to finish it fast. but now that i think of it i dont have an answer yet

this is a hard one for me, i need to think on it a few days.

i mean if i say it is OK to lie to save a live, but then a politician lies to millions of people to save lives! then it seems the severity of the lie outweigh the lives ,maybe!

aargh this is too hard.
 
This question is simple. The pure 100% truth is almost never the best approach even just from the standpoint of social lubrication.
 
I can think of all sort of hypothetical scenarios where lying is acceptable.
 
You guys all lie or lied to kids about Santa Claus, Easter bunny and other mythical things.
 
I voted strongly disagree. There are many situations with children, in my job, or when teaching, that lying is far more productive.
 
I lie constantly to the people i deal with at work, hell i arrested a bloke a couple of weeks ago based on a lie. On a personal level i lie mostly to spare people's feelings or avoid hurting them if i know the truth will, especially if know there is an excellent chance i wont get caught lying to them. Oh yeah and you should lie to the cops at every possible opportunity if for nothing else but practice.

actually i read a philosopher iew on this a while back, now i want to find that article again. his point was building trust with kids you should not lie about easter bunny and santa clause, even if you believe in jeebus or other mythical beings yourself. i will see if i cant find it again.

I am extremly honest to cops. and other authority figures. people sometimes tell me what the **** dude you are such a snitch you snitch on yourself!

once caught i just tell the truth. although it was only a few times. and even a lawyer told me that was extremly stupid. i told the lawyer you are extremely stupid. your job is not to let me get of scot-free. the job of the lawyer is that the law treats me fairly and justly! me getting off for committing the crime is not justice


but not only with cops as a student i used to ride the tram without paying, when the public transprotation cops came instead of acting like i am searching for transportation pass, and saying stuff i lost it or acting all stupid. i would just tell them look i did not have one, and just thought i would take the change to get a ride without paying. so give me the tick et alreayd move along and have a nice day
 
It would certainly be an interesting, and probably very lonely, existence if no lies were ever told.

as a kid i used to believe those things! the day i found out arnold Schwarzenegger did not do his stunts i felt betrayed! as a lil kid in the 90's!
dammn those movies!
 
This isn't that interesting a question. We all lie every now and again. "How is my new hair cut?" "Oh, it looks really nice!".

You should focus on more controversial questions.

This is an example of social lubrication. We lie countless times per day to keep social interactions moving throughout our day.

My friend: "How are you?"

* me inside: I am terribly depressed today and do not feel like opening up to someone, even someone I like and/or trust...so...

Me: "I'm all right, how are you?"

These kinds of things happen constantly all day for all of us. The wife asks if her hair looks nice even though you don't like her new cut very much, but you realize she really likes it. Your daughter asks if her picture of a pony, that looks like a snake having a seizure, looks like it is real. Your neighbor parks in front of your house, you find it irritating and glare at him, he says "oh sorry, I will be just a minute is that ok", you say "sure no problem". Without these kinds of lies social lives would grind to a halt.

Social lubrication.
 
To be clear though I voted "slightly disagree" because I also think it can really get out of hand, and sometimes we need to curb our natural reaction and be real with people even if the "truth hurts", so to speak. It can also pretty easily become habit so lie first, tell the truth later, if ever. My son was tied to a girlfriend for a while who was the epitome of this. Even when the truth was completely benign and there was nothing at stake she opted for the lie, no matter how small.

If the circumstances change that does not make the original statement a lie, it makes it wrong, and actual in that case it would make it simply moot. A lie implies intent to deceive on some level. It is highly irritating when people call a false statement a lie. People can be wrong without lying believe it or not.

Also you cannot really lie about a future event unless you are purposely constructing a lie, because the future event may yet happen. Again this would potentially be a false statement but not a lie.
