It's unclear from the video what I'm supposed to do about women's underrepresentation in media other than feel guilty and tweet a slogan.

Not just the media... Government, businesses, etc. No one is calling for your individual guilt (what a weird place to come to after seeing the video). You can share it to educate more people, or do something about it if you feel so inclined.

I guess I'll only go see movies with women in the starring role to be fair, regardless of whether I think the movie looks good.

And shame on all of us for when we don't watch a second of the WNBA playoffs this summer because we hate women! How can we put with the injustice of Lebron James making millions while these WNBA women make a mere normal salary? I'm a monster because I don't want Julia Roberts starring in the next Jason Bourne movie.

someone is a little defensive this morning.

Ok, just watched it. I'm going to go kill myself now. Thanks for the good times jazzfanz.

Is there sufficient evidence to believe that we, as consumers, are what's driving movie companies to hire male directors, writers, stars, speaking roles, etc?

If our greedy, capitalistic owners could get the same production for dramatically different compensation, wouldn't we have more companies hiring nothing but women?

Driving? I'd be surprised if it weren't a factor. With that said, I'd like to think the age(/race) of decision-makers/general historical inertia are greater causes of the disparity (for popular media anyway). In the long-run, women voting with their feet/wallet is what will "correct" the current situation (IMO).

The dearth of intelligent female voices in popular media is depressing (is there anything sexier than an ambitious, intelligent woman?). While I think there's some value in shame activism, an issue like this is better addressed with the provision of useful information to those who do or might care. What are the causes of and potential solutions to the underrepresentation of women? Are there good movies/shows directed by or starring women I should be aware of? What else can I do to help more female voices be heard?

But where's the quantified evidence?

I'm not saying it's not a problem. The video had a message, and I've listened. But it's only a message... not evidence of why it's that way, or a way they'd like to fix it.

Well, other than flooding twitter with more hastags.
