Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Yeah... The player who did start at SG position for the Jazz for 2-3 years - Ronnie Brewer, was constantly criticized for numerous flaws he has in his game. He WAS the STARTER but I do not think any team will take the fact that he STARTED for another NBA team into account before sitting with him on the table for contract negotiations.

That's why this is all nuts. We can't possibly be hoping Wes will be a starter longterm. He's a born backup. So why start paying for that right away? We can get backups right now to match Wes' production at half the price. The guy is worth 3mil tops. 7 is insane, and a 9 million dollar hit to kick off the party is absurd.

Blazers going after Matthews makes no sense. They traded for Babbitt. Then they took two more guards in this draft and already signed one of them. Why are they going after Matthews?

I hate Portland. That 9 million dollar upfront payment is lunch money to Paul Allen. To us it's big. Best thing to do is let him go and hope Miles can man the 2 spot.

Here's the crazy thing: I've been dying for the Jazz to stop pretending Miles is a 3. He's way more effective as a 2. Maybe this speeds up that process.

Ah, I disagree. I wouldn't have last year, but I'm seeing C.J. finally start to fill out in the upper body. He keeps it up and he will be legit big 3, small 4, Antawn Jamison size. Doesn't play big defensively, though, which is why I have for the longest time thought of him as a 2 and not a 3. Doesn't matter which one he is in the Jazz offense.

Please never call Miles a 4 again, never. Miles is a wing player, he is capable of guarding (maybe not well) either spot because he has the size and quickness.

If the Jazz really believe he is a legit starting 2, they will match. Sure they wanted to pay less, but Wes got a lot of minutes in the playoffs. The fact that Portland front loaded is a two edged sword. It makes it tough this year but much better in the future.

Miles played the 4 in the Jazz offense in small lineups several times. Was the high post man when he, Korver and Matthews were on the floor together.

Besides, I didn't call him a 4. I said he could attain small 4 size.

This kind of situation reminds me a lot of Marquis Daniels. He had a big rookie year that was parlayed into a big contract, similar to what Wes is getting. I don't think Daniels hasn't been as productive since and certainly didn't prove to be worth that contract. I wanted Wes to stay, but he's gone (or at least he should be). Have fun rotting on the bench in Portland.

I might hate Portland more than Miami... The smart thing HAS to be to let Mathews walk. I would love to have him in uniform next season, but it just doesn't make sense. Think of all of the cap space we'll have next off season... that we'll do nothing with... sweet.

You're right. Portland doesn't need Wes playing behind Roy. But the way the Jazz played it, a guy like Paul Allen, with his deep pockets, had the funds to make it really hard for the Jazz.

It's how you play poker - and the Jazz suck at it. Just like with Millsap Jazz showed their hand: "we love this player and we're definitely going to match any offer." So of course someone else at the table - who has a bigger stack than you - can afford to stick it to you and make you either lose the hand or make you overpay for it. For all their "no comment"s the Jazz FO suck at hiding their hand. They sit on their hands and slowly bleed their stack away until they start to tilt, and lose even more money overpaying for a hand (Memo, AK).

What would be sweet is if the Jazz were not really in love with Matthews at all - but played it up that they were in order to get someone like Portland to try to stick it to them, and then the Jazz sit back and let Portland keep the overpaid player. FOOLED YOU!!! That's how you're supposed to play. But the FO is clueless.

How to play this now? Memo to Jazz: KNOW WHEN TO FOLD 'EM!!!
