Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

I was certainly wishing for something around 3 or 4 mil a year. However, this is basically CJ Miles and Harpring type money. And I don't see a difference in going into the tax for Wes than I do for Sap. Granted wings should come cheaper. I also think the fact that Sloan spoke highly of Evans and his basketball IQ means they may keep two rookies this year who both play the wing. Evans will come cheap. I won't be surprised if they let him walk but I won't be surprised if they hang on to him either.

I don't think they'll match the offer, and I really wanted Matthews to stay. This is the worst off-season in quite a few years for Utah, imo. I'm pretty bummed.

I agree completely. Utah can't recover from terrible offseason's as quickly as other teams. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the offseason plays out...

You're right. Portland doesn't need Wes playing behind Roy. But the way the Jazz played it, a guy like Paul Allen, with his deep pockets, had the funds to make it really hard for the Jazz.

It's how you play poker - and the Jazz suck at it. Just like with Millsap Jazz showed their hand: "we love this player and we're definitely going to match any offer." So of course someone else at the table - who has a bigger stack than you - can afford to stick it to you and make you either lose the hand or make you overpay for it. For all their "no comment"s the Jazz FO suck at hiding their hand. They sit on their hands and slowly bleed their stack away until they start to tilt, and lose even more money overpaying for a hand (Memo, AK).

What would be sweet is if the Jazz were not really in love with Matthews at all - but played it up that they were in order to get someone like Portland to try to stick it to them, and then the Jazz sit back and let Portland keep the overpaid player. FOOLED YOU!!! That's how you're supposed to play. But the FO is clueless.

How to play this now? Memo to Jazz: KNOW WHEN TO FOLD 'EM!!!

If only it were that simple. If it is, they really are dumb.

A couple of points that I disagree;
- Comparing Millsap's RFA to Wes'. Actually Siler summed this up:

"Millsap was automatic for Jazz to match because he's a big man, with 3 years in the league and was expected to succeed Boozer." https://twitter.com/tribjazz
- Can you prove me that Millsap does not deserve that contract? He could easily be considered a talented, promising and reliable, multidimensional bigmen, IMO. Do you agree? How many players among centers and power forwards at the same age, can you put the ahead of Millsap?
- Considering that nobody could predict an injury like one happened to Okur (and by the way, he expects to come back opening night) , and considering DArko's, Haywood's contracts ( both length and value wise) and the contracts of every NBA player that is called "bigmen", can you still think Okur is overpaid? (In case you want to compare, Matthews' contract starts with 9.2mil)
- From where, or which of KOCs or any team management member's comments did you get te impression that the Jazz will do anything to keep Matthews, i.e, they are in love with WEs? I, for one, do not think that Jazz FO will match that offer, at all. They are reported to find players who they can add by using the MLE, which Wes insisted on but KOC declined. I also do not want them to match that heavy contract.

If Jazz knew Mathews was the better player and they wanted him for the long run and on the cheap they should've kept him parked on the bench last year.

Sad to say that, but the league is cutthroat and it seems like the jazz keep getting the short end of it.

I am really in love with this guy and his story but Jazz FO have to understand they need to let him go in order to teach others that trying to screw Jazz might cost you. Because if they don't they will hurt themselves much harder in the long run as everyone would think they can get away with this game year by year

Portland wonders why they have such ****** ****ing luck with draft picks? It's because karma doesn't like **** like this! ****ers!!!

This kind of situation reminds me a lot of Marquis Daniels. He had a big rookie year that was parlayed into a big contract, similar to what Wes is getting. I don't think Daniels hasn't been as productive since and certainly didn't prove to be worth that contract. I wanted Wes to stay, but he's gone (or at least he should be). Have fun rotting on the bench in Portland.

Daniels was a clown with poor work habits, loved partying and was injured prone. There are plenty of guys who continue to play well after getting a contract so what gives you a feeling that Wes will just tank it after getting his contract. There are zero signs he would do it.

Just for the record:
- Memo ->9.450 mil
- Millsap -> 6.200 mil
- CJ -> 3.700 mil. next year.

Memo - declining ability, maxed out potential, will he be ready to play a full season. Certainly replaceable.
Millsap - undersize, is he a starter, certainly replaceable.
CJ - Finally started earning his money but we have had to wait four years. Were his numbers better than Wes. Certainly replaceable. Is he a starter?
