Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

This contract does not effect the LT more than the 5.7. The Jazz have to pay the 9.2 but I am almost positive it does not effect the tax like you are trying to claim. You are way to hung up on the toxic first year.

The bad part about this contract is 34 M for Wes. That's way too much for him.

Well, looks like none of us knew offer would be that high, and unfortunately even KOC had no idea. You know, as if he has not been actively negotiating with Wes and told him to find another offer with someone else.

Unfortunately we can't go back in time and test what we would have thought then. But signing rookie FAs usually takes place with more information than choosing NBA draftees because the rookie FAs have usually played some league ball or might have worked out more, even after the draft took place. And my contention here is that some players should be signed for more time. Should an undersized PG such as Dee Brown be given more than a year guaranteed? Probably not--and he wasn't. Kudos to the Jazz. (See? I can praise, not only criticize. Not sure why are acting like such an apologist.) Should James Augustine get more than a year guaranteed? Definitely not. Should Matthews have been signed to two years guaranteed, based on the information available at the time? I say yes, just like Gilbert Arenas was (not that WM= GA). I still don't know why you're so hypersensitive to such analyses.

So an undersized PG that had a much better college career did not deserve 2 years but an undersized SG with a worse college career did? Yea right. Your reaching. The Jazz may have made a call here but I don't think they thought he would still be on the team after CJ and Korver came back. Good job by Mathews earning it but I don't see anyway they "should" have know prior to him actually playing in the NBA that he would outplay 3 experienced players and cause them to trade one of them.

This is ridiculous. The article clearly said Jazz were expecting 25 mil. And you suggest they were in the loop? You know what being in the loop means? Let me give you an idea. Nets make an offer to Booz for 75 mil, and before the ink is dry on it, Booz signs with Bulls for 80. Bulls clearly were in the loop. When you expect 25 mil and offer comes in at 34, which KOC had no clue about and will only look at it on Monday, I would say we were not in the loop, wouldn't you?

Nope they knew he would get an offer and there is no reason to worry about it until they do. What did being in the loop have anything to do with it? Your being naive to the max.

If they don't get the contract til Monday, does that mean the 7 days to match, starts then?
Who knows? I would guess that league rules require that an offer sheet be delivered within one "business day" and that the team with matching rights is then given 5 "business days" from the time of delivery to decide, but it's a minor detail that most people wouldn't know.

Maybe there are some rules I don't know about, but why wasn't KOC on the phone with Wesley's agent at midnight making him a fair, 2-3 year offer? There's no way Wesley was expecting this offer from Portland and I'm almost positive they would have taken it. The "go out and let another team set your value" thing failed pretty hard.

Read the thread if ya want peoples thoughts on this, eh, H.E.? We done been over and over it. Of course the first question is: What makes ya think they didn't, to begin with?

Jazz did what we expected them to do by now. Sit on their behinds and wait for something or someone else to force them into some kind of action. But actually in this case that approach might help them if they continue it all the way to the end. Just do nothing. Let Porty have Wes.

If Wes was determined to stay with the Jazz, maybe. But since he was obviously determined to find the best money offer available, there's no way Wes would have taken a "fair" offer right at the beginning of FA. He and his agent aren't stupid.

You mean trying to be proactive and negotiate with a free agent of your own team that you like instead of telling him to go and find another offer would be too worrisome? Who is being naive here?

An undrafted rookie should not be making more than the #1 pick in the draft for the next 5 years. Pass KOC, and laugh as Portland continues to suck.

If Wes was wiling to take less money to play on the Jazz, the deal would have probably been done by now. The only way he signs with the Jazz right away is if they offer him what Portland offered him. But as a restricted FA, their goal is to go and find the best offer they can. They aren't stupid enough to jump at the first offer they get. They can see the ridiculous salaries FA's are getting this offseason.
