A Matthews discount would have been what though? I don't feel sorry at all for Wes. He just was signed for nearly 34 million dollars. We need to stop thinking with our hearts and more with our heads.
 
It wasn't a "cheap" issue as i see it. They did screw up on Matthews. They could have had him for less. They were thinking he'd go find his exact value as set by market (and it would be reasonably within Jazz range) but a surprise occured. That happens. If you are correct at your work all the time, I'd be amazingly amazed.

Korver was let go. Done. Finished. Not for any price. (other than notably below his market value i'm sure) That was not a mistake but a choice.

I realize YOU value Wes for 4 @ 16. Or maybe 5 @ 20. But what if KOC didn't want to go over three years on a deal? What if his outer limit salary was 4mil per year? Say he thought 3 @ 15 was the highest he'd go. Should he have offered that to Wes BEFORE the FA period when Wes was eligible for the MLE? And what difference would it have made? Wes' agent wasn't going to sign him before he tested the market. Once Wes had that ludicrous offer, what was KOC going to offer that would convince him to leave money on the table?

I'm not sure of what you are saying. I'm shocked the Jazz didn't even communicate with him. Also, i'm a fan and would like to have had him for less. What I'm i missing.
 
You could also make the claim that matthews should have called the Jazz and said he just got offered FULL MLE but wants to stay in Utah, make me an offer, if it's fair I'll stay.

Matthews got greedy and thought the Jazz would match no matter what. He gambled and lost but gets 34 million to be a backup.
 
Wes sounds bummed. He would have been a fool not to test the market. If the Jazz would have offered him a low ball offer like some of you are saying then the Blazers come in and offer him nearly double he would have been offended and you all would have called the Jazz cheap SOB's. The way this played out is the best thing financially for Wes and for the Jazz, while they will miss Wes, it's not like his talents are impossible to find.

Pretty much. You know Portland said, "Sign this now, or it's off the table." He chose to sign a contract that would cripple the team we wanted to play for. Maybe he didn't realize it then, but he chose to sign that thing.

I'm really bummed just like the rest of you. A Bell/Matthews tandum at SG would've been so sweet, and I really liked Wesley.
 
No one forced him to sign that offer sheet. I like Matthews a lot, but I'm not gonna feel sorry for him for a second.
 
There should not be ANY posts about how Wes would have signed for less. This is a two way street. Wes signed his offer. He could very easily have called KOC before that to talk about a lesser offer. It doesn't sound like that happened. So he's got nothing to complain about.
 
Wes is a hack! He said No hometown Discount. He also could have easily informed the Jazz of the deal Porty had on the table and how front loaded it was. Who knows, maybe the deal being front loaded killed it.
