Kristen Kenney just throws softball/fun questions for players.

Having done literally 100s of interviews myself as a journalist for newspapers and periodicals, I don't agree. Unless you're doing political-type interviews, which is a whole different thing and something I've never done. You want your subject to open up and to do that you need to make them relax and feel as comfortable as possible. Sure, she throws softballs but that's her role. Like Craig Sager, all he did was throw softballs and he did it to perfection.

He's joking I think... he has that dry humor.

Dry humor often has an element of truth to it. I'm sure he considers Haywood a friend, but a "good" friend would have had some loyalty to his mates, instead of talking about Jeremy freaking Evans.

Haywood is a bad friend.

Locke is good with stats and talking on his own, but he is not a good interviewer. He says too many things that make the interviewee feel uncomfortable, which is a basic faux pas. I don't think there's much he can do about it because it's part of his style, personality. The young lady, Kristen Kenney is that her name, who took over the court side interviews last year is far better at interviewing.

He asks questions that lead to the conclusions he's already made. He tries to get them to say the things that confirm his own findings. It's really awkward, because most guys have no idea what he's trying to ask and it comes off as weird. Ego driven interviewing. Annoying.

I read all 7 pages of this media day thread and without adding up the comments, I would say 5.5 of the pages were about Locke and 1.5 pages were about the jazz. David Locke is the worst and those who love him cheer secretly cheer for BYU or pump their dads... weights in the back room. Locke is a shrill, selfish, unapologetic, plagiarist and is the only thing I don't like about the jazz currently (outside of not having a go to scorer).

I hate that this media day is Locke central.

No, interviewing athletes is not easy, at least not a lot of them. If you ask them basic basketball questions they are going to give you basic answers because they have answered that same question hundreds of times. Locke tries to change it up and get them to give different answers. A way to do that is to ask them personal questions and make them think introspectively.
