Memo traded to NJ

I'm just gonna have to stick my neck out there and appear as ignorant as I am on this particular matter, but can someone explain to me the details of a trade exception? I feel like I kind of get it, but don't really understand it fully.

Thanks in advance for educating me. ;)

No. The Jazz did to distribute minutes better in a crowded back court.it
Not to mention saving $10M (or whatever that amounts to on a pro-rated basis).
Hate to see Memo go, but he was clearly not the Memo of old. WE all saw that in the 2 pre-season games. And who knows if the trade exception will be used. KOC could still pick up a player for $10M from a cash-strapped franchise.

dcfaithful...it means the Jazz can acquire a player for up to Memo's old salary without having to send anyone to the other team. In a normal trade, if team A is over the cap and will be receving player(s) in return, the traded salaries have to roughly match (within a tight percentage) or leave both teams below the cap. The Jazz used a trade exception (which we got from Chicago for Boozer) to acquire Al Jefferson. Minnesota wanted to shed salary so the only thing we gave them, other than picks, was Kosta. And that was because they insisted he be thrown in.

The exception might be pretty important. Several teams are trying to shed contracts to make a move for Howard and Paul. Jazz could take on a veteran and get high pciks in return. Or maybe have room to take on a "bad" contract that a team might want to include in a trade for someone else.

I wonder what Corbin thinks about this? He did put Okur in the starting lineup in the 1st preseason game against Portland - a weird move to start Okur and Jefferson together (both slow on defense, Okur got burnt by Wallace all game).

May be Corbin was told to start Okur to show New Jersey that Okur is fit and can still play??

Love the trade. Thank you KOC for forcing the hand of Corbin to give the kids time. That TE and Pick will both be good. High 2nd rounder in 2015 as they will still suck. Most interested in the TE. Memo I will miss your wife the most :(

You may be right about the Jazz showcasing Okur; but this was clearly a forced move by the Nets.

Lopez is gone until March with a broken foot. Nets only other center is El Busto - Johan Petro.

In no way does this position us any differently for next year. Memo was gonna expire anyway.
Actually it does. The Jazz right now are over the cap, but under the tax threshold. With memo's contract expiring, the Jazz would be under the cap, but not by $10.8M. So they could only take on a player for a salary up to the cap. The trade exception circumvents that restriction. Jazz can take on $10.8M in salary and put themselves back over the cap by a big chunk.

The second quote better be true or the first one is dead on. If this is it, and nothing else is in the works, then wow what a stupendous waste of an expiring, let alone what Memo can bring to a team. He is worth more than a TPE and 2nd rounder, even if just as an expiring.
The move is financial, as well. Take that entire salary off the books for this season. So Miller saves the pro-rated portion of $10.8M + the corresponding luxury tax penalty as the team is now under the threshold. And Miller also will now RECEIVE a payout for being under the limit. Someone would have to weigh in on the exact details, but the financial benefit to the Jazz, if the exception is not used this season, could be in excess of $15M. I know us fans don't like to consider the financial implications of trades, but that is HUGE! Remember, KOC dumped Harpring, in a move that also cost us Maynor, and didn't save nearly that amount. This time he actually gets a pick in return and has until December next year to use the exception.

Pretty sure we were already under the LT
