Mighty Quin interested in Spur's Assistant Engelland

GS job is likely more attractive as he steps right in to a contending team. Plus he's been Kerr's coach. Snyder likely knows him from being in the SA organization, but I'd say GS has the inside track.

Possibly. But this is the point that you start offering a heck of a lot more money to get him. The Jazz absolutely need a coach with this type of knowledge and emphasis if they want to improve their offense. Pay the man and lock it up.

This. I would rather have Chip than any free agent available in the next couple of years. If there was a choice, that'd be my decision.

I'm sure they saved some money on the Snyder hire, so now it's time to splurge on surrounding him w/ the right people.

It's amazing to me that an NBA team can willingly pay a guy like Marvin Williams 7 million per year, but will pinch pennies to avoid having to pay a very good assistant coach a real salary. I understand that players are the stars and that the impact from coaches isn't that great. . . but it's not insubstantial either. A guy like Engelland should be worth more to a team like the Jazz that NEED everyone on their team to become better shooters.

Imagine Favors with a mid-range game and Burks way more consistent from beyond the arc? That helps with both P&R and spacing. He's only ever been a shooting coach, and an upgrade plus pay raise is going to be needed to get him. Promote him and then offer 20% more than GSW are offering. Assembling a rock-star coaching staff is critical for a team like this that struggles to compete for stars. Gotta build them yourself.

Where has that ever been stated as being the Jazz' philosophy? I'll bet Phil Johnson was one of the best-paid assistants in the league. As for Lowe...well, Ty choose him. Jazz said money wouldn't be an issue with the HC hiring. I doubt it would be in terms of the lead assistant.

On Tip-Off this morning, Locke said he asked Jazz brass this and they told him "no way," because they value Bryant too much with our team.

Great. Thanks for the info. My second part of the paragraph was the alternate, suggesting Bryant would continue to aid in the development of both rosters. Bryant probably isn't the coaching type since he choose a different path by opening up a training business.

In any case, I think DL does whatever he can to retain both Jensen and Bryant, independent of the staff Snyder selects. Bryant heads up all player development and Jensen is either promoted to the bench, or gets a front office title.

I didn't necessarily mean the Jazz in particular. . . I was commenting more on the value of Assistant Coaches league-wide vs. what they get paid.

Tony Jones: Source told me Brad Jones and Alex Jensen are virtual "definites" to be included on Quin Snyder's staff as assistants

Jody Genessy: Guest coaches helping Jazz at mini-camp include Curtis Townsend (Kansas), Phil Beckner (Weber), Roy Rana (Canada) and Joe Dooley (Fla GC

The question is if that means that they're going to be bench coaches, or Player Development assistants like they have been previously. If it means that they're both bench guys, then there's one spot left open. I'm hoping for Engelland as one of those spots just so the Jazz can become an extremely proficient team on the offensive end. The key to pick and roll is understanding the defense and then knocking down shots. Stockton and Malone were amazing because they could both shoot from anywhere on the court in that process.

Good. So 2/3's of the staff is done. Now he just has to convince Engelland to betray his old pupil. Ironically, in NBA circles it's now called doing a "Kerr" after Steve agreed to a deal with his mentor, Phil Jackson, only to turn around a day later and decide to go to GS. I think Bryant will be promoted into Alex Jensen's old role and be given the title of "Director of Player Development."

This is pretty much exactly how I see it as well. Snyder will have his hands in both offense and defense. Jones/Engelland would be primarily offensive coaches, while Jensen is primarily the head defensive assistant. Any other assistants hired would help out in their areas of expertise. Maybe give Karl Malone an expanded role with the Big Men and hire both him and John Stockton and official Coaching Consultants to help the young guys truly understand P&R.

All this gets blown up if they can somehow hire Messina as Associate Head Coach. He'd fill Jones' role. I'd still try to hire Engelland and then would likely promote Jensen to the bench as well. Not sure what to do with Jones in that situation. I like him, and I'd love to have him on staff somewhere. . . but I wouldn't pass up adding Messina and Engelland if the opportunity was there.
