Mock Draft Exercise #1 - Pre-NCAA Tournament

I mean, I don’t think he’s any more special of an athlete than a guy like Jericho Sims. Like I said, I think he’s athletic but I don’t think he’s a physical freak in any way. And I’ll say it again, there’s so much more to defense than being athletic as a C. You look at the best defensive C’s in the league, it’s not a vertical pop contest at all.

He has more potential to improve given his situation, but he’s also significantly further away imo. It’s his high potential for growth that makes him an NBA prospect at all, but given he’s so far away I wouldn’t say that equates to actually being a high potential player.

The idea of him being a late first isn’t horrible IMO, but I like a lot of other guys on the board. You also know what I think about drafting for need, so no need to rehash that. The general idea of addressing defense through backup C is pretty questionable though.
Well we also drafted Esgecombe. Addressing backup 5 is absolutely a good idea to improve the defense. The Jazz currently don't have a single backup 5 on the roster

And Sims is a freak athlete.

Sims also never had a block rate half as good as Beringers while he was in Texas. It's easier to accrue blocks in college than it is a pro European league. He's a much much better prospect than Sims

If we drafted Beringer, we also wouldn't really have a backup 5 because he's not ready to do anything. I already don't like drafting for fit, so drafting for fit theoretically 2+ years down the line is even more silly to me. And if we were drafting to improve the defense, backup C is not what my focus would be on there. If Beringer was as good as Kessler at defense, we'd still suck at defense and his potential impact is capped by the virtue of being our best defender's backup.

This is precisely my point, athleticism =/= defense. So even if you do consider Beringer a freak athlete, that doesn't mean he is suddenly a good defender. So much more to defense than simply being athletic. Sure, Beringer can learn quicker than his peers, but he also has much more to learn.

He's currently a good defender. That's why he gets starts as an extremely young 18 year old on a pro team that plays in the Eurocup.

It's all relative, good for Eurocup maybe. For me he's at the intersection of both high risk and lower potential.

If you're hell bent on drafting a C, I guess it's fine here. I certainly like other C's on the board more, but whatever. I just don't agree with picking for fit in the first place, that defensive C is the most important fit, or even that he's the best defensive C here. I wouldn't be too bent out of shape, but I would have definitely gone with Demin or someone else instead.

He played football, so that automatically means he'll be good bc he played another sport. Wait, does that count for the non-American football?
