The capital is one of the oldest cities on Earth (9000 years), and it is littered with ancient ruins all over the place. I mean, you can be in a modern neighborhood, and you'll stumble upon a 3000 year old site among modern villas that isn't protected or anything. The food is amazing. Literally among the best in the world. The culture is unique and fascinating. And the country is relatively safe.

Can't you pretty much do everything in that part of the world in a small time frame? Seems like the best reason to go to Jordan might be just....I'm in the area anyway because I'm going to Jerusalem/Bethlehem or/and Cairo anyway....might as well hop over to Jordan too.

America is the definition of racism. Only diference is we changed from physical slavery to virtual slavery both at home and in neo-con foreign policy.
 
On jordan being relatively safe: my wife's two cousins were murdered there within the last six months. They are relatively famous for something. Not sure what, but they were well known in jordan. The murder was made to look like a double suicide, like they jumped off a building that was under construction.
 
Trinidad & Tobago has to be on this list. The population of Trinidad is roughly split between peoples of Indian descent (as in India) and peoples of African descent. The current political parties have grown out of that demography. It's the most racist place I've been, I think, even if the racism isn't as hate-filled as the racism in the United States. And, since I've just mentioned the U.S., it's right up there.

I enjoyed reading that. Fascinating. Kinda took an angle I'm not used to seeing. Interestingly implied the agency in Europe w.r.t. the current mess in the ME.

Some of my favourite writers (Yoni Applebaum, Ta-Nehisi Coates) wrote for the Atlantic. I rarely agree with Jeff Goldberg but his profiles on Obama are next-level


Where the globalized world ends up is so, so hard to predict.
