Bay area is fun, I went to grad school in Berkeley. Cost of living is crazy high, though. It was high in Berkeley, and even higher in SF. Consider living elsewhere (for example, we lived in El Cerrito) and taking BART or bus into town. That's what my wife did--took the bus from El Cerrito to SF each morning.
I'm confused about why you are talking about employment if you are going to be in grad school. Isn't grad school pretty much a full time thing? I know grad students in my dept here at BYU are expected to work/study about 40-60 hours per week. Berkeley was similar. There was one semester when I got a part time job teaching ~10 hours/week for an MCAT review course, but that almost killed me and I wouldn't advise it.
