Totally false on a number of levels...

1: T-Mobile has no plans to roll out 4G right now. They are rolling out HSPA+, which is just a faster 3G. It's capable of up to 21 meg speeds- depending where T-Mobile caps it. By comparison, Sprint's Wimax (4G) is capable of speeds over 100 megs, depending where they cap it (they currently have it capped at 10 megs but have promised to raise that in the near future). In addition to that, T-Mobile is rumored to be rolling out LTE next year, which is the same 4G that Verizon and AT&T are rolling out (and Sprint will likely be switching to in the future). So to say T-Mobile abandoned 3G in order to support 4G is not true in any way.

2: T-Mobile doesn't use the same frequencies for their data as anyone else. So if you want to buy an unlocked phone from Europe and use it on T-Mobile, plan on only getting voice service and EDGE data. No 3G.

Having said all of that, when T-Mobile rolls out their HSPA+ data in the SLC area, it will be a valid alternative to Sprint. But right now, T-Mobile has regular old HSPA 3G data in the SLC area, and no really good phones anyway. There is a rumor that they might get the iPhone later this year though, for all you guys that like iPhones but don't like AT&T.

Speaking of which, Salty, how is your battery life? I'm basically deciding between the Droid X and the Evo now, and one thing I've read in a few reviews is that the Droid X seems to have much better battery life.

P.S. It looks like the Evo would actually cost about $10/month more for me than the Droid X, given the discounted plans from my employer.

Battery life is not good on the Evo. I streamed music over 3G once to see how long it would go. From a full charge I got a little over 6 hours. You can go around 15 hours or so with only moderate usage. It's pretty crappy. Doing the same thing with 4G on, I only got a little over 4 hours of streaming. I have 2 extra batteries that I keep in my car/briefcase/backpack just in case. You can get them on ebay for $10 which includes 2 batteries and a charger for them. I also have a USB cable that I leave at work so I can charge it from the work computer if needed. And, of course, there's the car charger. It's a must have for any heavy user.

You might want to check with Sprint regarding employer discounts. I get a pretty good sized discount from Sprint, and as far as I know just about everyone does. I've even read stories online of Sprint reps giving out bigger discounts for other companies when you don't even really work there. I guess they are so desperate for customers that they don't mind giving out discounts right now.

Sprint's customer sevice does suck though. If that is important to you then Verizon is definitely a better choice. I just try to get it right once and then never call them again.
 
The battery life in my iphone 3Gs is pretty good. When streaming NPR, I can get at the minimum 10 hours of use.

Yeah this Evo has some pretty crappy battery life, no doubt.

I should have mentioned, however, that I was also browsing the web pretty much the entire time when I ran those tests. I could probably get a little longer use if I wasn't using it so heavily.

They do sell extended batteries too, but I haven't bought one.

Light to moderate usage will get you through the day, but heavy usage will require a charger, USB cable, or extra battery for sure.
 
I did the deed... ordered the Droid X today! I'm excited! What's really cool and a bit mind-boggling is the way it and similar phones like Salty's Evo are so many devices in one. You combine a high speed processor, an internet connection, cool sensors, and an open source operating system, and wonderful things result. It's a phone, a web browser, a PDA (appt calendar, etc), a camera, a video camera, a flashlight (using the camera flash LEDs), an MP3 player, a GPS, a calculator, a USB storage device, a bar code scanner, a movie player, a game player, a streaming audio player (Pandora), a speedometer for running/biking (via GPS), a remote control for a computer, a metal detector (of the stud finder variety, I think; probably not of the beach-combing variety), a guide to visible star constellations, etc.

Salty: thanks for your input. In the end, although the 4G and front-facing camera were tempting, I decided the $10 extra per month I'd have to pay for the Evo wasn't worth it. If the prices had been the same, I may have gone that way.
 
Congrats Colton! You're going to love that Droid X.

Now you can join me in my prediction that smartphones will replace computers for the average Joe within the next 5 years. I need to start another thread on that...

I made the horrid choice of swtiching from Verizon to Cricket because the cost was just too much to overlook. I had no idea just how horrid Cricket was, and I can't believe how much I paid for their phone. I want to just kill myself for being so stupid.

iPhone Users Score Top Marks In Sex Survey

A new survey found that iPhone users dominate their BlackBerry and Android toting peers when it comes to one very important category: number of sexual partners.

The survey by the dating website OkCupid found that male users aged 30 had an average of 10 sexual partners if they used an Apple iPhone, compared with eight for RIMM's Blackberry users and six for Google's Android users.

The results are even more pronounced with women. The average number of sexual partners for a 30 year old female iPhone users was 12.3 partners.

BlackBerry women came in with 8.8. The Android's females had just 6.1 partners.
