NBA.com Mid-season report.

Come on guys, get real. San Antonio, TEXAS. Utah is ****ing Siberia by comparrison.

The size of the state/city is not the issue. SA is a small market team. They make small market team money, just like the Jazz. If I remember correctly, SA has one of the smallest markets.

Yes but not only does the population of the state of Utah dwarf that of Texas, they also have no state income tax.

SA is a small market team, but they were a solid team throughout the 90's, had one injury plagued year, got lucky in the lottery, and drafted arguably the best player of the past 13 years.

If Utah had tanked, then drafted Duncan, we'd have a few rings now too. That's the difference, not the size of the market. Although, as far as free agency goes, SA is certainly a more appealing destination than SLC. At least for most players.

SA is not as small market as you think. There was a discussion on this quite a while back and I think it was Saltydawg or someone else who posted stats that showed Spurs were quite a bigger market than thought.

But anyways, even assuming that they can be compared with us market-wise still they have had Duncan and a couple of all star type players for the last decade or so. We just dont have that type of players currently(when we did have something comparable, we made the finals only to lose to a superior team). And even the Spurs havent made the finals in the last 3+ years. Shows how tough the competition is.
It is not the coaching. The Jazz have mostly made lateral moves these last 3-4 years. IF they need to be elite they need a solid push upwards personnel-wise. Get a stud SG for example, and see where that takes us. Or get a stud center who can block shots and drain some shots. You cant expect to compete for a title when it looks like we barely have 1.5 or 2 options on most nights. You need atleast 3 solid options and then some.

The Spurs are worth a lot of money to the league. Market size is meaningless. This list will generally tell you who's going to be good and who will suck...

Great find. Lets see, the Spurs have annual revenues of $133 mil, compared to $118 mil to Utah. And the Spurs have an annual operating income, and I think this is the more important statistic, of $19.1 mil, compared to $7.9 mil for Utah. Ladies and gents, that ain't chump change.

Of course, the bandwagon argument. How long would it take to write a computer program to replace Sloan? Just use the same starting line up no matter what happens, do your pre-scripted substitutions/time outs regardless of anything happening in game, then blame losses on some tired cliche such as "we weren't playing as a team" or "if you don't defend you lose". I'm pretty sure no one would notice the difference.

+1 rep

San Antonio won several championships, and they're currently leading the NBA. It's a small market team. I'd be happy if the Jazz can COMPETE for a championship, instead of being an early-exit playoffs team.

I was satisfied with the Malone/Stock finals years. Why? Because we finally put a team together that could actually compete for a title. We missed the boat on that one largely due to MJ and some mistakes, but we got there.

With the current team, and over the entire past decade, it just seems that the organizations focus has shifted entirely from competing to be a championship team to simply being happy we win more than lose.

I love watching the Jazz play. For the most part I really like our players (note: this does not mean I have to think they all walk on water, you can like a player and acknowledge his shortcomings at the same time, imagine that?). I do think Sloan is one of the best coaches in the NBA, easily top 10 if not top 5. And I do not expect a championship.

What I expect, as a fan and as someone who actively helps pay the player's salaries (8 years of season ticks and jerseys and merchandise...that is where the money comes from), I do expect them to at least TRY to compete. Obviously the system works for what it was intended, to help us win more games than we lose. But I would like to see them try something different when things go south for a while. I have always hated Sloan's mantra of "you have to play through it". How many times have we watched a 10-15 pt lead turn into a 10 pt deficit as he watches them "work their way through it" and does nothing to try to counter what is going on. Sloan is an engineer and a commander in a world where we need a tactician and strategist.

All I ask as a fan is to try something else when the time-worn is not working. Shake things up. At least put on the face that a Championship is our goal, and not just being a playoff team.

I am certain that is Deron's goal and that is why he will leave when he gets the chance.
