NBA.com Rookie Ladder: Trey Burke moves up to #2

They update it every Wednesday and last week Burke was at #4 I think. He has been in the top-5 all year so that is a good sign, but here is the top-3 and what they have to say for anyone who is interested:

1. Michael Carter-Williams - MCW had some nice-looking (and not-so-nice) numbers in four games since our last look. The ROY frontrunner averaged 15.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Of course, with a 21-game losing streak comes some ugly numbers, too. In that same span he shot 40 percent from the field (21.4 on 3's) and turned the ball over 5.5 times per game.

2. Trey Burke - Burke's had a nice little five-game stretch. The Jazz, however, haven't. In that stretch, Burke has averaged 16.8 points and 4.8 assists (against just 1.2 TO's) while shooting at a 50 percent clip -- from both the field and beyond the arc. Burke has scored in double-digits and hit at least one 3-pointer in all five games. Burke is clearly getting the hang of things and things are looking up -- despite the five-game losing streak.

3. Tim Hardaway Jr. - In his most recent rookie blog on Men's Fitness, Hardaway touched on his ups (he's been hot lately) and downs "This season has certainly been a roller-coaster and at the same time, I think it's everything I've ever imagined. ... I knew I would have a slump here and there and I knew I would have a stretch of games where I'd do really well and a stretch where I didn't play as well. But everybody has that. It all depends on how you move on and how professional you are about it. For me, my approach is that there are no days off.

4. Victor Oladipo - Much has been made this season about Oladipo's "natural" position. Is he a PG or SG? One player who knows about Vic's transition is Dwyane Wade, who had a similar start to his career before settling at his shooting guard spot. "[Wade] tells me (about playing PG) all of the time. I just have to be patient like he always tells me." "I love the way that his game has progressed," Wade said recently. "I could tell the frustration (of playing PG) on him when we played them once. He was out there on the court trying to figure it out and I went through the same thing".

5. Pero Antic - Antic continues to climb up the charts thanks to his big role in keeping the Hawks in the playoff race. The Hawks have won five straight and the Macedonian has been a big reason. Of all the rookies on the Ladder, Antic (and Plumlee to a smaller degree) may play the biggest role on a playoff-bound team. Since his return from the ankle injury, Antic has averaged 11.4 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 47.1 percent from the floor and 38.6 on 3s. He's hit at least one three in 11 straight games and 19 of his last 20. With his size and Korver keeping teams honest, his ability to step outside has been huge.

Just a side note, whoever has finished #1 in the NBA.com Rookie Ladder has won ROY since it came out. Does Trey have a legitimate shot to win it? What does he need to do better? Can they really give it to MCW barring the 76ers break the record for most consecutive loses?

This is great news. He probably won't win ROY, but he's developing nicely, and is clearly the top 3-4 player from last year's draft. To have gotten him for the #14 and the #21 pick was a steal indeed.

I think MCW will get it just because he's the higher profile player and has had more attention all year. Long run though I wouldn't trade Burke for MCW.

Wow last year's draft sucked hard. Like really bad. It will be a miracle if there is more than 1 player who makes an all star team. Pathetic

i can see timmy hardaway jr, mcw, oladipo, and giannis becoming an all star someday. and there are 6-7 guys who will be a solid 10 year pro.

i think trey has all star potential if he played in the east. west is just too deep in pg position. unless he becomes a legit 20/10 guy 3 years later, i don't see him being an all star.

I'd like to see trey with the ball in his hands a little more. I'm not seeing the playmaking ability that I believe he should have. That said, really glad we have him and can't wait to see him Ina real offense next season.

Half the time he has to pass it to Hayward to make plays. Seniority rules in Corbin's system.

I really like Trey and what he can do for the Jazz, getting him at #9 was a great move. That being said, its a pretty awful draft when MCW and Trey are at #1 and #2. Makes me wonder where MCW, Trey, Oladipo and Bennett would've gone in the draft had they stayed an extra year

It's way too early to judge a draft. Most the top guys spent most of the season battling are injuries. Noel, Len and Porter all top 7 and many believe had it not been for Noel injury he would have gone #1 overall. Also it's not like the draft wasn't viewed as weak through out the whole draft process so if it does end up that way it should come as no surprise to anyone.

As for Burke he was my pick as the top player in the draft. Of course the weaknesses of the draft played a huge role in that ranking. The reason I loved Burke as a prospect wasn't just physical talent like most of the prospect I usually project well in the NBA. It was his work ethic. He made himself a completely different player from year 1 at U of M to year 2 not just physically(which if you look at him in his Fr. year to So. year you will see he improved greatly there as well), but how his skillset and his play style. If he does the same next year Trey will be special in this league.

If Burke has a good run the last 10-12 games I can see him getting some serious ROY consideration. I may be subjecting MCW to guilt by association; but I would question any recognition of achievement from any player on the Sixers team this season - that franchise has taken the tank to a whole new level.

This is one thing that bugs me when I read a lot of ROY rankings. I see Burke get hit alot for Utah's record and yet I see nothing of the sort for MCW and the Sixers have a worse record.

Assuming we have a new coach.

Well if I was pro MCW I would point out that there is just no talent on that team. Where as Burke is surrounded by lots of potential and talented young players

MCW is putting up good numbers because he's playing a lot of minutes on a really crappy team.

Yeah, he's averaging 6 apg, but he's also averaging 4 turnovers a game. Shooting under 40% from the field, under 30% from 3, and under 70% from the line. He is not efficient.

I think he's got a lot of potential, but I agree that his stats show a textbook "putting up good stats on a bad team" scenario.

Only Giannis. Oladipo maybe all defensive or some **** like that.

Not that I think Burke will get it but also another consideration is MCW is also putting up these numbers in the east which is much worse then the West. Not just overall team talent but in the PG's they face game in and game out.

Also this really isn't the thread for it and it may have been brought up in other threads but as far as him not being used with as the play maker, I got two reasons. First should be obvious and was known before the season started, this was the season to see what Hayward has and just turn it over to him and see what happens. Second is PG rookies have the toughest job so how about lightening the load a little and letting Hayward get some of those responsibilities to simplify the game for Burke who is on a steep learning curve as it is.
