NBA Summer League Wild Overreaction Thread

Kon is really good in pnr. Also looks like he’s a pretty nifty passer once he gets into the second level of the defense. Idk that he ever becomes a strong finisher at the hoop but he’s pretty crafty.

I'm very surprised that Charlotte let him play as much as they did.
I guess if he gets hurt then they are 1 step closer to AJ, boozer, Peterson

Here is an overreaction and confirmation bias from summer league:

Javon Small might be the third second round pick that Memphis has nailed in a row. He'll likely only get playing time if there are injuries, but it feels like that is almost guaranteed with Memphis and specifically Ja right now. I love Scotty Pippen Jr, but I think Small might be the better player offensively.

Javon Small only played two games in Vegas, and admittedly they were at the end of the SL, so less good players were playing, but here are his stats per RealGM:

Per36Minutes: 26.4pts, 7.0reb, 10.9ast on 48/50/89 shooting splits. That would be 12th highest points and highest assists of all players with at least 20 mpg.

4th highest PER, 5th highest differential (ORtg-DRtg), and #1 in Pure Point Rating where he was 15.3 and next highest was 7.1 (https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/s...ats/Qualified/points/All/desc/1/Summer_League)

Also admittedly, these stats are almost completely meaningless based on two summer league games, but I'll go ahead and glaze him while I can.

Really think it was a mistake to consider Harper the 2nd overall pick without challenge. Think the Spurs might ultimately regret passing on Ace/VJ given their roster construction
I challenged it but not very hard because I wasn’t confident enough in the face of overwhelming consensus. More troubling than the weak perimeter shooting is his weirdly-low assist numbers (I know the raw numbers don’t tell the whole story, but at certain point in extremity, it frames the general reality). He’s a big combo that will not be very good off the ball and whose teams’ offense will be susceptible to defenses sagging off of him.

What does this apply to in the regular season?: teams that are trying to reach the playoffs with their players healthy enough to do well and teams that want to get to the bottom of the league standings for draft positioning. There are very easily seen reasons behind this.

I have no reason to believe that the guys teams hold out in summer league are being held out for anything other than very easily understood reasons: either they've shown too much already or they have actual injury issues. In either case, I have absolutely no problem with my favorite team hoping to increase its odds that it can start the real season with a healthy lineup and that the players can use the rest of the offseason to train rather than rehabilitate.
Very reasonably stated. It's entirely possible that I've overstated the problem, perhaps motivated by my generalized loathing of load management.
