NBA Tweaking the Lottery - how will it impact the Jazz?

Sounds like a good system to me. Even more than the odds, I think that having the lottery for the top 6 picks instead of just the to 3 picks will help. There's usually a much bigger dropoff between 3 and 4 than between 6 and 7.

I think the crux of this new system is that it will eliminate "whole year tanking" and "ugly or blatant tanking" near the end of the season to get to that #1 spot.

Why? Because with this new system, teams 1 through to about 8 will have more or less similar odds: 11%, 11%, 11%, 11%, 11%, 10%, 9%, 8%. Therefore once your team is sure to be in the bottom 8, there isn't a real incentive for your team to lose a lot of games at the end of the season just to overtake the other bottom 8 teams.

What you will get is teams that have just missed out on playoff spots may do a "quick tank" to get better positioning at the end of the season - but that's really unavoidable in any system.

That's much more preferable to the ugly GS tankings. I like the proposal.

Yup agreed.

Also if Silver moves quickly during the offseason to gather support and is able to make it clear that this will be implemented next year, then we're gonna see some pretty competitive games this coming season - can't wait.

Might increase tanking though.

There are probably more teams per year who could realistically tank into the 4th-6th spot than can realistically tank into the top 3.

There are usually 2 teams per conference that narrowly misses out on the Playoffs spot right? Meaning you have the 16 teams that have made the playoffs and the 4 teams just missing out - that's a total of 20 teams that definitely doesn't tank in a given year.

So it's down to the bottom 10 teams. Going by that article it's likely the odds are gonna be (roughly) 11%, 11%, 11%, 11%, 11%, 10%, 8%, 9%, 7%, 6%.

So you're really down to 2-3 teams trying to go from 6% --> 11%. To me that's not much of an incentive and frankly with only 2-3 teams doing it out of 30 teams, that's pretty good.

I love Burks as a starter and have high hope for Exum. Hopefully the tank is dead and we can watch some entertaining ball.

As for the new lottery format... Anything that keeps the Cavs from winning another 1st overall pick is fine with me.
This new format would give them an even better chance if they landed in the lotto.

What needs to happen as well is the #1 winner shouldn't win top 3 for 4 years after.

The wheel system is better. AND, the biggest argument against this system was: "it's not fair because Miami could get a #1 pick, blah, blah, blah."

Well Cleveland just received THREE #1's the last four years AND LeBron James. That wouldn't happen in a wheel system.

From the "wheel" article:

"that every team would be guaranteed one top-six pick every five seasons, and at least one top-12 pick in every four-year span"

Also, LeBron going back to Cleveland...doesn't that show that the CBA worked? It has broken up the superteam and kept others from forming.

Back to the article:

"The Wheel proposal is more complex, and it has gained significant support from some powerful people around the league. It took a backseat this week as the competition committee focused more on the league’s favored proposal."

The wheel will be the "fix" IMO. This is just something to talk about to help us realize the wheel is better.
