News, rumors and buzz around the draft and free agency

The hard cap is $138.9. Miami is at less than $135 right now. If they include Herro, which there is speculation, Miami could do this deal acquiring Westbrook for Dragic, Winslow and Herro then slide right under the hard cap.

Once a team signs a player using a sign and trade, it institutes a "hard cap". I don't think it has ever happened in the history of the league until the Heat traded for Butler and then GS traded for Russell. The hard cap is $138.9 million. Those two teams must stay below that level all year long.

This article lays out how close Miami is should they sign Herro: https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article231882803.html

"The Thunder ideally would like to take back salaries less than the $38.2 million that Westbrook will earn this coming season because OKC doesn’t want to increase its luxury tax payments. That’s a big deal for OKC, which is $2.25 million above the $132.6 million tax threshold and is subject to the punitive repeater tax if it stays over that threshold.

But because the Heat is hard capped at $138.9 million after the Jimmy Butler trade and won’t have space to sign any more players after eventually signing Tyler Herro, Miami cannot send out less money than it absorbs in a Westbrook trade. And the Heat needs to send out players earning at least a couple million dollars more than Westbrook’s $38.2 million if it’s a 3-for-1 trade."

So...

Miami needs to send out pretty much what they get back. The Thunder need to cut about $3 million. Exum makes $3 million less than Winslow. C'mon DL and Zanik, figure something out.

One thing I’ve thought on OKC is will they move Gallo? I don’t think they are competing this year... he’d have value and would be a piece they could move for less salary to get under the tax. Gallo doesn’t seem like a guy that’d be real happy in OKC.

Not that we’d be interested but more of a different angle/route they might go to ultimately duck the tax.

I do think we need to just accept the fact that Dante gonna be on this team and part of the roster planning for this year... its fun to dream, but there is zero indication that guy is going anywhere.

I definitely think he'll be moved, I just don't see any reason for them to keep him.

If they got Dragic I think he could be moved for a lower salary too... They could accept a little salary and finesse the rest later. I would think they'd keep Winslow if they got him in the trade. My prediction is it would be Dragic, Winslow, Waiters for Westbrook. Then OKC figures out how to duck the tax from there.

Actually, it looks like ANY team that makes a sign and trade or uses their MLE is “hard capped” at the tax apron. So, it sounds like it happens a lot, but most teams never come close enough to the apron for it to be an issue. These new max contracts are going to change that.
