Well I was baptized at 8 and am technically a member of the church, but don't believe in God.

So I guess until I cancel my membership I am still a Mormon by name.

If I was an athiest, I'd probably hang on to the chirstian label because I totally enjoy getting presents at Christmas.

could it also be sort of a cultural thing...like people who aren't "practicing" jews. they'll still say they're jewish but not believe in any of the religion?

Could be. I know a lot of Mormons who say they are Mormons but don't really "believe" a lot of it based from what I've seen.
