Olympics Thread

There's no extreme left wing in the US of any note at all. Saying the Democrats, or even significant parts of that party, is crazy stuff. There's a _really_ extreme right wing, though. Anyway, back to the Olympics...
There's an extreme left, but they have next to no political power and very little influence vs the extreme right which has a lot of power and influence.

There is conflicting information though and we really dont know the details. But she was eligible to fight under the rules. If you want to change the rules or dont like them then that is a different discussion. She was eligible and should be allowed to fight. IOC can change the rules later if they decide, but that has nothing to do with her fighting now. That could be a discussion to have, but again we really dont have enough to go off of. My guess is this way overblown.

Carini the Italian has apologized for the controversy.
"
"All this controversy makes me sad," Carini told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I'm sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision."

Carini, also 25, said abandoning the fight had been a mature step to take, but she expressed regret at not shaking hands with Khelif afterwards.

"It wasn't something I intended to do," Carini said. "Actually, I want to apologise to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke."

She added that if she met Khelif again, she would "embrace her".

Yeah, agreed, that was my thought behind the "of note", but I guess that could've been worded differently.

I just saw Yuta Watanabe won Bronze in badminton.

Same name and country, but not the basketball player.

Of course this becomes a right wing left wing issue where both sides rush to dumb black and white answers when the issue is quite gray. Here is a thread I thought was pretty insightful.

Exactly.
And again, Bottom line. Not a male. Not trans. Didn't break any rules. Gets beat by other women on the regular. Her next opponent is excited to box her.
She is just doing what all the other athletes are doing. Competing in the sport she loves and trying to win gold for her (extremely anti gay anti trans super religious) country that is proud of her achievements.

And she is getting roasted with hate for doing nothing wrong.

It means she is a female so let her compete as a female. I would get it, to a degree, if she was lapping the competition to such an insane degree because of whatever advantage being intersex provided her (if there is any at all), but that isnt the case.

And yes, it's a right wing issue. They have made a huge part of their platform the anti-trans movement and the public misgendering of people anyone who looks masculine is a big issue. Maybe if your daughter was the target of these kind of attacks you would view it differently. The left (and it's definitely not just the left, it's anyone who is a decent human)"rushing" to defend someone from ugly attacks is a good thing.
I mean I watch a lot of UFC. There are hella masculine looking women in it. It's kind of the nature of the sport. It's about violence. They aren't supposed to look like beautiful feminine women (though some do).

These are some of the best fighters from the UFC.

Wow in the Chinese badminton mixed double

After receiving the gold the woman just got proposed to LIVE on tv.

Man, these kinds of things just gets me every single time.

lol at all of yall that think this is simple.
I think the question about whether Imane is a man or a woman is a simple one - she obviously considers herself one and apparently has her entire life.

The question of her or other intersex or transgender individuals' participation in women's sports IS a little more complicated, and can't simply be boiled down to XX=fine to participate and XY= not fine, which is an argument a lot of people seem to be running with. There's a reason the IOC stopped using Karyotype testing as part of their standards - people can (and do) go their entire lives as a particular gender only to discover their chromosomes don't line up with their purported gender. These revelations have upended people's entire lives, and don't always correlate with "male" traits or physical advantages derived from those traits over their peers anyway.

Spain continues their strategy of trying to win by just shooting 3s, except now they arent hitting them.

22 attempts vs 11 by Canada, both with 5 makes.

Jamal Murray and KO dont look half as good in FIBA as they do in NBA. I wonder why that is.
