Just curious: are you still in China? Wondering what reaction is there to the Lin Yu Ting "controversy." (Of course in Taiwan, I think they are fairly well united behind their country-woman.)

I choose to believe he’s an epic troll. If not, I’m inclined to agree with you. Just hard to believe someone can be so dense ALL the time (and throw out bait that suggests he’s basically a pedo).
Yeah, buts its been a consistent character for over 10 years now? I wish I was as enlightened as NAOS to ignore him, maybe one day.
I don’t think endurance sports reflects the power differential between men and women. Which in the case of fighting in particular would be a seriously meaningful difference with safety ramifications.
I want to be clear that I’m a total coward engaging on the trans-athletes discussion and probably won’t engage further. I think the problem is basically unsolvable. You have to decide if sports even matter or not beforehand. I tend to think they don’t but the second I think that I think that, I change my mind. Sports certainly matter to the trans athletes.
I’m just gonna kumbaya my way out of this discussion now.
I just got back from China a couple weeks ago. But I'm not really seeing anything about it on China social media. My wife who's Chinese and following the Olympics doesn't even know who she is, only the other girl. China doesn't talk much about people not winning. They definitely don't cheer for Taiwan.

I have heard (from a Taiwanese acquaintance) that when Taiwan defeated China in badminton, there were a bunch of social media posts from China trying to claim that China got two medals in the event. But who knows if this was widespread, or just a few of the ultranationalists online?
I'm sure lots people said that. A lot of mainland China firmly believe Taiwan is theirs. But they aren't actively cheering for them to win and especially when they are playing each other. They really want to beat them badly. That badminton loss hurt and they are trying to lash out. In real life most average mainlanders really want to attack Taiwan. Then after greatly punishing them they can unify as one country.
I don't know the percentage. But most Chinese are ultranationalist. So yes, I'm sure it was them posting online.

Taiwan was actually built with all the gold in China, Chiang Kai Shek and the nationalists stole China's gold reserves before heading to Taiwan at the end of the civil war.
