#OscarsSoWhite - Thoughts?

I ain't ****ing with this thread

Spoken by someone with an obviously deep understanding of what it's like to be Black.

Plenty of blacks have been nominated and won in the last 10-20 years. In fact, it's almost exactly representative of society. If anyone should be complaining, it's Hispanics and Asians.

So take your dumb ******** to someone who doesn't know any better and **** off.

Creed was good, but Micheal b jordan wasn't Oscar worthy in it.

Will Smith sucks. That accent was horrible. He shouldn't win.

I didn't see any black people play roles that merit an Oscar this year.

There should be more black people in the roles, for sure, but Michael Caine has a point too. The current black actors shouldn't expect an award because they are black, they should be arguing that the roles need to be more inclusive and the black actors need to play more diverse (not racially diverse) characters.

I'm sick of seeing "angry black man" and "funny black man" and will Smith just isn't making it any better by trying to be serious. They need to have action roles, serious roles, everything.

Idris elba should be bond, BTW. That would be pretty cool.

The Academy Awards should go away completely.

Great job, actors and directors. Thanks for being the most important people who contribute the least.

LOL ... somebody should research this... in ALMOST all mainstream Hollywood movies I've seen there's at least either 1 funny black guy or 1 angry black man depending on what kind of genre the movie's in.

Also not totally related but what about....

#NBA_ALL_STARS_STARTERS_So_Black ????!!!???!!!

Obviously we need a quota system where at least 1 white guy should get voted in each year to balance out the #OscarsSoWhite issue/strike.

Idris Elba would be an amazing James Bond IMO.

Ooof

I don't think the problem is directly that there are no black nominees, but that the way casting is done currently in Hollywood there are unlikely to be many deserving nominees who are black or any other non-white group. And that really sucks, because most find it easier to relate to people who look more like they do, especially growing up, so having a diverse Hollywood that can really represent all walks of life would be really nice. The fact that there are no black nominees is an easy to see thing to call attention to crappy/lazy/whatever-you-want-to-call-it casting.

As much as you do.

There's a huge list of blacks that have won at the oscars.

Two things:

the oscars? Really. When all the better crap to focus on with regards to racism this is your fight? (Your = Pinkett, Smith, lee...)

Oscar board needs to be more representative of today's America (like everything IMO) but any action toward "quotas" is asinine and absurd.

I don't claim to have a deep understanding of what it is to be Black in America, but I do claim to making a good faith effort to listening to those who do, reading about their experiences, and to try to put myself in their place and understand the world from their perspective. So at the very least, my reaction is not a knee jerk one dismissing the concerns/complaints of black people when they point out the lingering, systemic biases they have faced and continue to face. So, I'm less inclined to claim that blacks "scream discrimination when it's not there" because at least I understand that discrimination in both explicit and implicit forms pervades all aspects of American society, even if I'm not living it myself.

A few more things:
1. Define 'huge,' as I suspect our definitions on this differ.
2. I don't approve of quotas anymore than you do. I approve of taking steps to fix the system the produces these results.
3. The fact that there's 'other crap' out there doesn't mean that one can't also advocate for other issues. For virtually every cause, there's any number of other causes 'more important' at least to someone else. Plus, people have this amazing ability to focus on more than one thing at once. Where it comes to advocating for causes, it's not a zero sum game. I see this as a really, truly silly complaint against someone taking up a particular cause.

Really?

I'm surprised that your make note of Hispanics and Asians, after all, people is people, right?

I'm sorry, but you don't come across as someone who is particularly in tune with issues of racial bias.

I appreciate the offer to **** off, but after thinking about it, I decided not to. Sorry.
