Our FO miscalculated on our second-round players

Brantley is bought in.

I like Oni more in terms of fit. And G-League stats can be misleading for role players.

Howard --> waived (now on Rockets)
Kidd --> waived
Williams Goss --> disappointing
Miye Oni --> disappointing
Brantley --> 2-Way contract
JWF --> 2-Way contract
Tucker --> signed
Morgan --> signed

At the end of the day you're talking about 8 guys that had little or no NBA buzz 6 months ago. You could probably find a dozen mock drafts that didn't even have Oni, Brantley or JWF being drafted.

If one of these 8 turns out to have a productive pro career then I'd call the entire process a success.

This thread is made from Brantley love, and that warms my soul.

Jarrell is a beast in heat, and when the time comes he will make the haters eat every last word.

From what I heard there was quite a bidding war for this guy, it's possible they promised him a shot right off the bat. Considering where the Jazz bench was a month ago, it might not have been the worst idea in the world.

As for Oni, he's shooting 38/31% - you better be a Bruce ****ing Bowen level wing defender if you expect NBA minutes with those numbers.
He;s only played 13 games so it;s SSS and he's had a few really bad games.

Roycee Oneale's only G-League game he went 4/17 from the field and 1/9 from 3. Some guys just play worse in the G-League cuz they are role players forced into doing too muchh.

I get that he'll be ready soon but to be super honest i'd much rather watch him in garbage time with Morgan and Tucker. Get those three out every game. Forever salty that Oni got the three year deal instead of Brantley.

I think they’ve always had long-term plans for Brantley. But the word is that he has a lot of learning to do when it comes to playing within a system. If true, the Stars was going to be the best place for him this year.

JWF is a similar story. The dude can score, but can he make plays for others, play off the ball, be effective as minimal role player? All of these were legit questions coming out of college. The Stars has been the best place for him to get lots of reps on these things.

Oni looked like he could come in and play a specific, minimal role. As of today, he probably can. He got the contract because of this.

The FO didn’t misjudge anything. I wish we could see some Brantley because of our glaring needs at the position he plays, but they aren’t holding him back for ***** and giggles.
I think they misjudged how ready Brantley was to play this season, imo. There was tons of buzz about Oni all offseason/preseason long, and zilch on Brantley. People only started buzzing about Brantley when we saw him playing. At this point I think most people on this forum, and probably in the FO would switch Oni's contract with Brantley if the opportunity presented itself-- especially seeing as Brantley plays a position of need (as you said).

Except Oni could have been useful against the Pels to try and shut Brandon Ingram down but he was nowhere to be found.

We can sign Jarrell to the same 3-4 year deal next year and he will be a year closer.

All of our second round platers are extremely raw. We have seven young players in JWF, NWG, Oni, Tucker, Bradley, Morgan, and Brantley. It might be a heck of a summer league team. They all need to play to grow.

I won’t tolerate Dal disrespect tho...
he’d still be g-leaguing if he had Oni’s contract— just saying that they picked the wrong dude for the 3-yr. this is obvs small scale stuff but I just thought it was interesting to go through all of their low-cost acquisitions and see what’s panned our (and what hasn’t).

This.

they haven’t misplayed anything.
So if you could go back— you’d still give Oni and Brantley the same contracts? I think if you say yes, you’re in the minority.

if your larger point is Dal, it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things that’s a different discussion (and that’s a good point, for what it’s worth).

If I’m not mistaken, the path they’ve taken allows them to control Brantley’s future for as long or even longer. If so, I fail to see the problem. Quite the contrary, in fact.

How can guys be disappointing if they havent played yet?

Oni is starting to play better in the G-League as of late. I think he's going to be a better pro than Brantley personally. Last game the Stars hardly used any big men and Oni got 11 rebounds.

The most surprising thing to me is that they signed Tucker and are playing him right away. He doesnt even really do anything to stand-out on the court either. It's kind of like watching rookie year Exum minus the expectations. His defense hasn't been anything special. I'm not sure why he's getting minutes to meld with the Jazz and a guy like Oni isnt (who seems to be a more versatile defender).
Either they believe in him or they are looking for trades, whether he or mudiay or someone else.
