Ouside the Box Idea for changing PG roles

Looking at Foye, Burks, Hayward, Mo, can the point guard and shooting guard positions be merged into 2 interchangeable positions? Should they be? Has it been done before? TIA.

It's been done many times but usually to hide deficiencies in one or both positions. One exception I recently read about was The Lakers in the early 80's when the innovative Paul Westhead had Norm Nixon run the team in the set offense and Magic Johnson bring the ball up in transition/break. If you look at The Laker stats in the early 80's Nixon actually led the team in assists during Magic's first 2 years.

Of course Magic didn't like that so Nixon got traded, Westhead go **** canned and they brought in Pat Riley and the birth of Showtime.

Proved himself, not exactly. However, I do believe Watson and Tinsley have proven they aren't the answer.

It certainly was in LA. Fisher was a shooter, not really a classic PG. I guess in most cases it's been done because the SG is a superstar who wants the ball in his hands most of the time. Then the PG becomes kind of an afterthought. The problem with Utah and the Utah fans is most are so locked into the "Stockton, pass-first" model that anything else is unacceptable. I'd argue the Jazz may have been a little bit better back in the days had John shot the ball more frequently.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having the primary distributor be someone else. Or, having a lot of ball movement, which results in assists being spread out. When Burks or Hayward are in the game, I think many of the plays should go through them. Pass to them off a screen and let them take the ball to the hoop, dumping it off to a big or kicking it back out to the "PG" (e.g. Mo) for a 3 if they're stopped in the lane.

Sloan ran a 2-PG system a bit with Deron/Maynor beore Maynor was traded, freeing Deron up to shoot more (and dribble less!). Certainly we're seeing a bit of the interchangeable guards with Foye and Burks. Neither are classic PG's, but in tandem, they're ok bringing the ball up and getting the offense going.

I like this idea better than getting a pass first PG in today's market. The pass first PG market is very slim and the Jazz must adapt.

Clyde was one of the best, outplayed Jerry West in those finals series with the Lakers, and they were often going head-to-head. But then West was in the later stages of his career and Clyde in his prime -- though it also can be argued that West got better as he aged (to a point that is). For example, Robertson was clearly better when they first came in the league but he regressed and West improved and was better than the Big O in the later part of their careers.

I think a totally outside the box idea would to put Big Al at point guard. I think attendance would rise because it would be hilarious.

Triangle offense. Jazz should run it against a league so deep in point guards when they don't have one themselves.

dont mean to bring up the knicks again... but.

Remember in 1999, when the 8 seed knicks made the finals and won a game vs the spurs? (i see aspects of both of those teams on this squad but i digress)

That was with a 3 guard triangle, Charlie Ward, Allan Houston, Lattrell Spreewell (our kids will be better than that!)

I'd like to see the triangle a bit, but I still contend that it doesn't matter much what the Jazz do until they obtain elite, versatile talent capable of bailing them out of stagnant sets.

We might as well get used to the offensive growth we have been seeing (some of us anyway) as that's the hand KOC dealt to us. The offense has been getting more dynamic and adding plays by the week. It's kinda sad there's so much angst in jazz nation that's blocking fans from seeing this growth. That'd require warming up to Corbin and swallowing Jefferson's game a bit.

Angst is exactly the word id use. i dont get it.

(the irony, to me. about the hitler thread is the backed-into-a-corner mindset, which reminds me of many posts ive seen. meanwhile we have more flexibility than anyone)

i also think we have elite versatile talent in spades. we just need time to develop it.

We need a guy who's somewhat of a true point guard but doesn't occupy the ball too much. Someone who can get 7-8 assists while not keeping it out of Burks' hands too much or Hayward's. Those guys need to each get about 3 assists a game as well, and ball movement in general needs to be the focus, not who's doing it.

someone who could get 2steals, 9points, 7 assists, 6rebs and take less than 10 shots in 30mins??

(alec's stats vs timberwolves last wednesday)

Chicago Bulls played Ron Harper at "point guard," but yeah, that was Phil Jackson's triangle, which we have no clue how to run.

It's good to have a player on the floor who can play natural PG even if we run a 2-guard front. It gives the team a lot more flexibility.

His sample size is so small, and it's not been in a starter's role, so I'm not sold on the idea. At all really. His handle isn't tight enough imo. But the more playing time he gets, the better it'll become so who knows. I'd probably enjoy or maybe even love running a starting five out there next year of Burks-Hayward-Carroll-Favors-Kanter with Big Al or Paul being man enough to step aside and let the new generation take over, alongside Marvin, Foye, Tinsley for one more year (as Burke learns as 3rd pg), and someone else. Basically, I'd love to see our bench become our starters and vice versa.
