I'm sure we would all take those players if they were available. No one is saying we need a pass-first PG, but we do need a PG who makes their teammates better.

I could argue that being able to hit the open shot and keeping defenses honest automatically makes things easier for their teammates, therefore make their teammates better.

Only marginally. If the answer was just hitting jump shots we could go out and plug in any 3pt shooter as our PG and have success.

And when you have invested two #3 picks into big men, you need someone who can set them up and take advantage of their size.

That's fine. But I don't see why Rivers couldn't be that guy... I also find that we'll struggle to score even with a good PG. We saw this offense suck with Deron running the show. And he already had years in the system!

It doesn't matter if we have Magic in his prime running the point, as long as we are basically the worst 3 pt shooting team in the league, we're going to struggle.

We're one dimensional no matter who's our PG.

We need some players who can score from the outside, stretch the defense, and keep defenders honest. Right now, teams have to guard the paint and watch the turnovers/bricks fly.

We need to get an outside threat to compliment our bigs. Like I said before, it depends on where the Jazz draft, but IMO, we're most likely going to be able to find a few good SFs/SGs in this draft. Focus on that. Get those shooters. Work on getting a PG later.

I know that I am beating the dead horse with this. With his ability to shoot and get into the lane for easy points, Rivers will keep the attention of the defense. If the defense was concerned with the PG because he can shoot and he can get to the hoop it will open up a lot of opportunities for the players around him.

I am having a heard time believing that even you Cy wouldn't like to see a Miller/Rivers draft combo this year.

If he can do all those things (shoot, get into the lane) as well as passing out to open players, etc, we'll be calling him Kyrie Irving 2.0. He'll be the top 5 pick this year.

But he can't. He doesn't have the court vision to set up plays for others. He's a SG in a PG body - as been mentioned before in these posts by other posters, he's more of a Jason Terry. Do we need a scoring 6th man coming off the bench, or do we need a solid PG running the system & feeding Favors & Kanter & Burks?

I've long been the biggest Miller supporter here. Rivers, not so much. I think his shooting is a mirage of sorts.

I've been following Miller the longest, I bet. BUT, Cyrone has been saying he wants him the longest that I know of .. I wasn't sold, yet, on his work ethic (getting there slowly). So, kudos Cy, I support the notion you were first in.

Rivers will just get it done .. just an opinion. The eye-ball test agrees with Cy though .. mines more of a hunch.

And I've been anti-Miller the most, I'd say. I hold with my opinion. Kids not a killer, the end.

For those of you who are opposed to the Jazz drafting Rivers as a PG, are you opposed to drafting him as a SG?

I'm not opposed to drafting him at all. I think he'll go lower than what his career would suggest. So yeah ..

Considering at least one and possibly two of the four young guys we are already developing will be at that position... ehh... not so much. Don't really want a SG in the first place right now, let alone an undersized one... that I haven't heard plays great defense (shooting from the hip here).

I know not all players cleanly sort into positions or exact team needs, but a floor-spreading but true SF and floor-spreading true PG (with some great off-ball shooting ability) would obviously be most ideal. I guess that's why I like Miller and Machado as much as I have.

Where the "IT" players come from, I'm not sure. Sometimes they emerge.

Alright, here's my umpteenth thought on this:

When you're drafting, you gotta think about what a player has that others don't. Usually, this factor is hieght, but it can be leadership, "IT", elite athleticsm, etc.

Now, what Marshall has is an ability to see the court that no other player in this draft has or can learn. Sure, he's not athletic, but there's plenty of great PGs who've made it like that...Mark Jackson comes to mind.
His shooting is my biggest concern, but if Hornaceck can fix that (He's fixed quite a lot of players' shots in his time here) then we've got ourselves the best passing PG to come out of college in a while. If it doesn't get fixed, then it's not like we're completely screwed because he can still run the point very well.

Bottom line is this: In any other draft, are there going to be more 'Marshall' type of players or more 'Rivers' type?
And that's my 2*2,000,000 cents.

I voted for 'others'. Marshall is slow and Rivers isn't a PG.

PKM, what have you heard about Harrow? I really liked him when I caught him on the AAU circuit, but I'd need to see him do well at UK to consider him as the future of the Jazz at the PG position. His frosh year at NC State was underwhelming, to say the least.

I've said it in a few threads, and I'll say it again, there aren't any intriguing point guards in college that I've seen. We need to get one via trade/free agency. Our top target should be Ty Lawson, but there are about 5 more realistic-ish possibilities that would make us a playoff contender with their addition. I say if we end up in the lotto this year, trade both picks to denver for Ty.

If we are trading for PG, I like Dragic or Farmar more than Calderon. They are younger and Dragic is a dynamic offensive player.

These. That's what I've been saying/hoping for ... Pick up a SF and then the BPA .. Analyze the personnel, then make a play for a PG via trade or FA. We get this draft right and all of a sudden we'll have PG's more than willing to take the keys to this team.

Dragic a dynamic offensive player, if that was the case the suns, with an aging Nash, don't you think Dragic would still be with the suns.
