I have to say that the bolded line cracked me up because I am a "much less athletic physicist" myself. (A physicist is a type of scientist that studies physics, like Albert Einstein. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physicist.) I think you probably meant "much less athletic physique", but I could be wrong.

I've watched every game this year, thank you: the miracle of DVR. I think he's been fine, especially with team defense. Part of the Jazz system is to funnel guys in toward Gobert. I guess I can see "average," but I certainly can't see "dreadful."

I must say Rubio's passing has been underwhelming in Utah and his teammates can't be the main reason because he was must-see-TV passing it to the likes of Darko Milicic, Anthony Randolph, Greg Stiemsma, Lou Amundson, Ronnie Turiaf, etc. He made a ton of passes where that limited center just had to grab the ball and dunk it. Derrick Favors is better than all of those combined.

Gobert doesn't have good hands and that leads to some turnovers, but at the same time Rubio badly misplaces some alley-oops for instance which NEVER happened before.

Race drivers will tell you they are closer to have an accident when they stop pushing, compared to the moments where they are going 100% and locked-on. Rubio is like a race driver telling himself not to go too fast. I read this from a Wolves' fan and I feel the same:
"I miss the shaggy hair and razzle dazzle. Too fundamental now, I want the flashy passes again."​

Same thing with the steals. He was always top5 in steals which also led (at times) to missed attempts and open shots for the opponent. Coaches have worked on calming him down, on controlling him. I guess it makes for a healthier coach, but also a less excited fan. I can't really determine his ability as a defender because he can make Russell Westbrook or Steph Curry struggle, and the next game Ish Smith has a career game on him. Overall I would say he's above-average, since most PGs rest on defense to be 100% on offense.

I believe Rubio is going to enjoy his typical 2nd half of the season improvement (he was solid in December) and re-sign in Utah. He clearly needs a stretch 4 with Gobert, that's why the starters with Crowder are +13.5.

An improved Rubio, a much improved Exum, and the Donovan we are watching lately? Fasten your seatbelts.
 
Well, from the standpoint of opponents shooting percentage (which of course does not encompass all defense, but still a very important metric) Rubio is less than average:

Overall, opponents shoot 3.8% better than their average when Rubio is guarding them.

Compare Exum, a good defender, and all opponents shoot under their average when Exum is guarding them:

As much as I like Neto, he struggles on defense, especially against athletic guards.
 
I'm just going to offer this thought on Mitchell:

While I think having him play alongside a proper PG does put him in attacking scenarios more easily, I think it also makes him approach the game more as a heads-down scorer instead of a heads-up playmaker. I think he knew he had to be more of the latter last night and it opened up his game and the team's ability as well.

I think he can play either guard spot, I am not scared of him being more of the 1 than the 2.

All of this... its 100% an option and I'm not sure why people are hung up on some 80s 90s era idea of what a pg does or needs to be. The offense is shared responsibility and if we want DM to become the best he can he needs to make the best plays for the team... not just be a scorer or then move to being a pass only guy. He needs to create... for himself and others. Giving him playmaking responsibilities requires more reading of the defense and may make him hesitant as a scorer at times... I'll take that over the "we need you to score" mindset that can lead to poor shot selection.

If we had another wing we could start with some creation ability that was a shooter I think that would be a better fit than Rubio or Exum. Like if you brought in OP jr. and slid Ingles to the 2 I think we'd be just fine.
