Porn addiction?

I think it was AtheistPreacher who posted a TED talk about porn. It was really interesting.

The point of the TED talk was that internet porn today provides the opportunity to view many different women in pornographic situations and it demonstrated that stimulation increases with that variety. Not to mention that the majority of women in porn have above average physical attractiveness. But as a person gets accustomed to viewing multiple unique women in a short period of time they begin to rely on that to achieve the required amount of stimulation to become satisfied. So, for our young boys, who have access to internet porn before the generally have access to female sex partner, they can develop this skewed sense of sexual stimulation before their first encounter with a female. Then, when they are with an actual female they are not being adequately stimulated and therefore have a rather disappointing encounter, one that can often be embarrassing and emasculating because they do not perform well and may not be able to maintain an erection. This further engrains this fantasy vs reality dysfunction into their sexual psychology. It can be a real problem. You can call it porn addiction or not, but if a person requires multiple images of different women in order to become stimulated and that same person has negative experiences with real life sex then their sexual desires are going to be focused around that which provides them sexual satisfaction.
Studies have not backed up this theory. It does have some straight forward logic but I am not sure it's true. It's a similar logic and argument people have against violent games and movies. I think people have the ability to separate fantasy and reality.

I think you are wrong about the ability to separate fantasy from reality. I've read some pretty compelling studies about it but I'm not sure where to find them. Maybe I simply fantasized about reading these studies. They sure seemed real.

I believe the TED talk was based on a study. It wasn't about porn addiction, it was about sexual stimulation and what internet porn, specifically fast access to many different nude women did to men's simulation levels. It showed that if you typically access multiple images of different women you are less stimulated by lack of variety. I'm on my phone but I could try to find the TED talk tomorrow.

I've watched it before, but thanks.

Moderation is key, you can learn a few tricks by watching how a sex pro does it. But yeah, don't beat to a pulp every Saturday night, that can't be good xD

There is a difference, or used to be, between addiction and compulsion. Both can be equally damaging and difficult to break, but addiction has a physical component to it where compulsion does not.

There is a probably apocryphal story of a record producer who married a porn star. His rock star buddies, whenever they came over to record, gave him a lot of **** about it. He finally said, "You all have recording equipment at your house, why don't you just use that to make your albums?" "Oh, well, yours is professional grade equipment, you keep it in good shape." He just smiled, "Exactly."
