Late to the party but yes… this is the issue with Ayton… the hard cap is the other issue. Unless we move JC or Bogey into a trade exception or cap space the hard cap would be pretty tricky for us.A few contracts ago, sign-and-trade players were excluded from following BYC rules; BYC rules only applied if you sign them and later traded them.
I think that is what is happening here. The sign-and-trade in #92 is the OTHER team doing a sign and trade. The team subject to BYC here first signed a guy for $10M, and then later tried to trade them. That's when BYC happens.
Exactly. This isn’t an issue for all sign and trade player, only ones that are due big raises compared to their previous contract. Because Ayton is coming off his rookie contract and is set to make significantly more in his next contact the Base Year Compensation applies. It does if they are Base Year compensation…. I think if they are getting like more than a 50% raise or something they are byc and Ayton qualifies.
It's pretty unprecedented for guys eligible for the super max at this point in their career to get traded, right?Exactly. I meant to say coming off of their rookie deal but we have seen it a couple times. It's strange to me how quick the Suns cooled off of Ayton. No, not if the incumbent team doesn't want to pay the supermax. See Demarcus Cousins with the Kings and Chris Paul with the Clippers.
Has Ayton signed a contract yet? If he has not, BYC rules don't apply, as I understand them. They only apply if you sign and then trade as separate transactions.Late to the party but yes… this is the issue with Ayton… the hard cap is the other issue. I just checked the FAQ, and in #93 it says the old BYC rules no longer apply. Changes, changes, changes.Has Ayton signed a contract yet? If he has not, BYC rules don't apply, as I understand them. They only apply if you sign and then trade as separate transactions.
He just signed his qualifying offer today so he’s now a RFA.Has Ayton signed a contract yet? If he has not, BYC rules don't apply, as I understand them. They only apply if you sign and then trade as separate transactions.
I’ve heard credible cap podcast nba nerds say BYC applies if signed and traded (Duncan Pelton types… but can’t remember who when or where… am I turning into @Thee Idiotic Minivan K). I’m just going to take their word for it here. I’m sure it could get done somehow… I’m just not all that interested. When Ayton started his career he said thing like his goal was to get to his second nba contract. One of the unique things about Rudy is he is so motivated… as a big it is a little rare. Many of those guys like basketball… but they don’t love it or aren’t consumed by it… motivation imo is one of the big reasons Phoenix is worried about paying him.Has Ayton signed a contract yet? Apparently the rules changed in 2011. I'm getting too old to keep up.I’ve heard credible cap podcast nba nerds say BYC applies if signed and traded (Duncan Pelton types… but can’t remember who when or where…
