Predictions for Mitchell's Progress for Next Season

I hope he can add a floater to his game. With a little better shot selection and better efficiency, plus getting more calls, I can see him getting 26 to 27 points.

More interesting to me, Royce’s progress. I think he is only scratching the surface of his potential. He’s already an elite defender and has elite athleticism. He might never develop great ballhandling but his 3 pt shot could improve. And once it does, you’re looking at a top defender coupled with a elite athleticism. I see James Posey Shawn Marion like potential in him.

The improvement of Royce is key. If he makes a leap the the team jumps to the next level imo.

If anything burns Mitchell out it will probably be when he realizes how hard it is to recruit another top player to come to Utah.

IAWTP. This, and perhaps the passion and work ethic of his own teammates. I'm not saying we have lazy dudes. Far from it. I'm just not sure any of his teammates are out there at 2am practicing their jump shot. He could want another Mamba.

If anything burns Mitchell out it will probably be when he realizes how hard it is to recruit another top player to come to Utah.

While I get this, I just wonder how willing for just a year or two contracts some may be willing to play here. Donovan is a hot commodity, great teammate, and the Jazz are a great organization with a great coach. There are good things about here.

Either way, the Jazz should push hard the next few offseasons before Donovan is getting paid max money and they have some cap space to spend. The next few years DL needs to make some moves and take some significant steps (even risks) to try and put the Jazz on the next level.

A few things to consider-

-Donovan will get better all around
-If Exum is returned he’s a good option.
-Royce showed some promise IMO on the offensive end and I expect him to come back better offensively next season. There were seriously some bright spots in Royce’s offense during the playoffs.
-Rudy obviously understands he needs to become stronger and a better offensive threat. I would not bet against Rudy doing so.

The Jazz are not significantly far away from being a contender, although other teams will be changing a lot too over the next few seasons. With some internal improvements, and a trade or break in signing just one decent player they have a chance of being really good.


As for Donovan, I hope he never changes at all, but he likely will to an extent. If he’s still the exact same kid next year I’ll be pretty surprised, but it may not be towards a bad way either. Fame, fortune, and talk can change a guy. I hope it doesn’t change him to the extent he’s not the same guy, cause he shouldn’t change a thing he’s great.

I'll make predictions after the Draft and Free Agency/Trades. It's hard to predict without knowing what the team around him looks like.

I’m not saying it’s likely I’m saying it isn’t impossible. If not, then you take a chance on some sort of trade IMO at some point before they have to max out Donovan and go for it in the next few years. You have to try.

The Jazz are in a decent position right now, with decent up and coming players. At some point within the next few years DL needs to go for it whether that be getting some FA to sign, or do a bigger trade. Donovan is great now, and going to get better. Rudy is great now and can improve offensively. Donovan can be the #1 option offensively, and with a bit more of a threat from Rudy offensively along with improving other players, he doesn’t need like a major star next to him just someone decent who can hit some shots and fill in when Donovan has a bad night. Even someone who isn’t great defensively would be okay, offense is where we are lacking and stretching the floor. Rudy can cover up a lot of defensive issues.

I’m pretty sure that the Jazz will add a great player to team up with Mitchell & Gobert. . . and almost as sure that player will come to the team through a trade. The question then becomes “can they afford to keep all three of them?”

Did those teams ever have cap space? Were those players ever especially well-liked? Were those organizations and their coaches pretty much universally liked and respected by the players in the league?

The answer to all of those with respect to this Jazz team and Donovan Mitchell is no. Mostly that those teams basically never had cap space (maybe AD's team has, Deron's Jazz and CP's Hornets certainly didn't, almost positive George's Pacers never did), which is most central to this point.

Furthermore, I don't know that Mitchell is the free agent hunting type. He seems pretty down with the internal development path (at least right now).
